he said.

“But if conditions remain past the threshold, then that tipping point is very real, and permanent on human timescales.

Dr Obura stressed we had not yet gone past the upper limit of the tipping point threshold for coral reefs, which is 1.5C.

“Unless the right actions are taken globally, urgently, on climate drivers … the increasing climate pressure means that all reef regions will approach their tipping points, and some may cross them.”

Other global tipping points include the melting of ice sheets, forest dieback and changes to ocean circulation.

Global tipping points include coral reef die-offs, the collapse of ice sheets and changes to ocean circulation. a majority, like 80 per cent [of coral] are in serious trouble at 1.5C,” he said.

“It means in broad terms that a majority of coral reefs are under risk of extensive dieback.

“We can no longer talk about tipping points as a future risk.”

What do Australian scientists make of the report?

Minderoo Foundation molecular ecologist Kate Quigley, who was not involved in the report, said the assertions of reef tipping points reflected multiple lines of evidence.

“The report’s suggested threshold of 1.2C for coral reef tipping points is consistent with previous global reports by the IPCC and more regional modelling assessments,” Dr Quigley said.

“We are already seeing widespread evidence that coral reef tipping points may have been breached … this is not a localised phenomenon — it is global in scale and unprecedented in severity.”

Terry Hughes, an emeritus professor and marine biologist at James Cook University, said it was debatable whether 2024 had been a global tipping point for reefs as it may actually have already occurred.

“Arguably, we passed the tipping point for coral reefs decades ago, and the transition from historical coral reefs to a different type of ecosystem is already well underway,” he said.

“The first global-scale coral bleaching event occurred in 1998, the hottest year, then, on record.

“Scientists predicted then that these mass mortality events would re-occur more and more frequently as temperatures continued to increase due to global heating.”

Dr Hughes, who also wasn’t involved in the study, said coral reefs weren’t the only marine environments that were vulnerable.

“The same combination of water pollution, overfishing and now climate change is also degrading mangroves, sea grasses and kelp beds,” he said.

“Coral reefs are not the only canary in the coalmine.”

But Great Barrier Reef Marine Authority chief scientist Roger Beeden said while globally coral reefs were under pressure, it wasn’t clear what the tipping point threshold was for each individual system.

“There’s a large number of species on the Great Barrier Reef … which gives it some inherent resilience,” Dr Beeden said.

An Australian Institute of Marine Science spokesperson also noted the global figures from the report “masked significant regional variability”.

The great ocean white-out

Scientists working along the most breathtaking reefs show what led to climate agency NOAA calling a global bleaching event for only the fourth time in history.

CSIRO climate projections scientist Michael Grose, who was not involved with the report, has written in the past about tipping points and trying to understand them in an Australian context.

He said the work from Professor Lenton’s team was seen as world leading and of a high quality.

“[But] there’s general kind of scientific debates about some technical aspects of tipping elements and their impact,” he said.

“Some of these [tipping points] have the biggest consequences of potential climate changes that you can imagine.

“And yet some of the aspects of it are really quite unknown. So it’s a really challenging area to research.”

Tipping points had occurred in the palaeoclimatic record, he said, and the chance they could happen again now or very soon could not be ruled out.

All of the Australian researchers agreed a rapid decline in carbon emissions was needed to protect reefs.

Dr Beeden said managing local pressures on coral reefs was also needed both in Australia and globally.

It’s not too late to decarbonise

The latest tipping points report has been released in the lead-up to COP30 — the annual gathering of nations to combat human-induced climate change — in Brazil during November.

Professor Lenton said global leaders gathering for the event needed to act before tipping points became irreversible.

And he said there was good news in that a positive tipping point had been reached for global energy.

“We’ve witnessed rapid progress in the uptake of clean technologies worldwide, especially, for example, solar power and electric vehicles,” Professor Lenton said.

“Although the world is destined to overshoot the policy target of limiting global warming to 1.5C, we argue it remains as a target or as a temperature level more relevant than ever.

“Because to limit these irreversible tipping point risks … we have to focus together.”

The first “tipping point” for the Earth has been reached, according to an international report from 160 scientists…

[23
152206,285,152205,746,89830,152208,82800,159,67,132,68,152207
0":"post-298814","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-environment","8":"tag-are-coral-reefs-dying","9":"tag-climate-change","10":"tag-coral-reef-bleaching","11":"tag-environment","12":"tag-great-barrier-reef","13":"tag-have-coral-reefs-reached-a-tipping-point","14":"tag-ningaloo-reef","15":"tag-science","16":"tag-united-states","17":"tag-unitedstates","18":"tag-us","19":"tag-what-is-a-tipping-point
["GET
