Former President Obama, speaking on stand-up comedian Marc Maron\u2019s final podcast<\/a> on Monday, said the Trump administration\u2019s policies are a \u201ctest\u201d of whether universities, businesses, law firms and voters \u2014 including Republicans \u2014 will take a stand for the nation\u2019s founding principles and values.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you decide not to vote, that\u2019s a consequence. If you are a Hispanic man and you\u2019re frustrated about inflation, and so you decided, ah, you know what, all that rhetoric about Trump doesn\u2019t matter. \u2018I\u2019m just mad about inflation,\u2019\u201d Obama said. \u201cAnd now your sons are being stopped in L.A. because they look Latino and maybe without the ability to call anybody, might just be locked up, well, that\u2019s a test.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a more than hourlong discussion<\/a> with Maron on the wildly popular \u201cWTF With Marc Maron\u201d<\/a> podcast, the former Democratic president said current events could jolt Americans. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019d be great if we weren\u2019t tested this way, but you know what? We probably need to be shaken out of our complacency,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Obama also criticized some Democrats\u2019 messaging as he touched on significant issues facing Californians and discussed the state of the nation\u2019s democracy, core convictions and the weakening of institutional norms.<\/p>\n

After Los Angeles-based Maron joked, \u201cWe\u2019ve annoyed the average American into fascism,\u201d Obama responded, \u201cYou can\u2019t just be a scold all the time. <\/p>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t constantly lecture people without acknowledging that you\u2019ve got some blind spots too, and that life\u2019s messy,\u201d Obama said in the interview, which recently took place in the former president\u2019s Washington, D.C., office.<\/p>\n

Faulting language used by some liberals as \u201cholier than thou,\u201d Obama argued that Democrats could remain true to their principles while respecting those with whom they disagreed.<\/p>\n

\u201cSaying, \u2018Right, I\u2019ve got some core convictions [and] beliefs that I\u2019m not going to compromise. But I\u2019m also not going to assert that I am so righteous and so pure and so insightful that there\u2019s not the possibility that maybe I\u2019m wrong on this, or that other people, if they don\u2019t say things exactly the way I say them or see things exactly the way I do, that somehow they\u2019re bad people,\u2019\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Obama\u2019s remarks come as the Democratic Party faces a reckoning after losing the presidential election in 2024, in part because of declining support from the party\u2019s base, notably minority voters.<\/p>\n

Maron, a comedian and actor, launched his \u201cWTF With Marc Maron\u201d podcast and radio show in 2009. Interviews with guests such as actor Robin Williams, comedian Louis C.K., filmmaker Kevin Smith and \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d creator Lorne Michaels often took place at his Highland Park home. <\/p>\n

Obama\u2019s 2015 interview in Maron\u2019s garage became the podcast\u2019s most popular episode at the time \u2014 downloaded nearly 740,000 times in the first 24 hours after it was posted. <\/p>\n

On Monday, the former president criticized institutions for capitulating to President Trump\u2019s demands. His words come as USC leaders are debating whether to agree<\/a> to a White House proposal to receive favorable access to federal funding if they align with Trump\u2019s agenda.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re a university president, say, well, you know what?
