JACKSONVILLE, Fla.<\/strong> \u2013 As Hispanic Heritage Month comes to a close, one Jacksonville woman is being recognized for turning her passion into purpose.<\/p>\n

Elexia Coleman-Moss, a Cuban American and founder of Empowerment Resources Inc.<\/a>, has spent decades mentoring at-risk girls and families in Northeast Florida. <\/p>\n

Her commitment to service began in childhood, inspired by her mother\u2019s teachings about dignity, respect and community.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re all God\u2019s children and we come in different shapes, sizes and colors,\u201d Coleman-Moss said.<\/p>\n

Originally from Sarasota, Coleman-Moss moved to Jacksonville in the early 2000s after earning a psychology degree from Florida A&M University. She quickly noticed a gap in mentorship opportunities for young girls \u2014 particularly those who lacked role models who looked like them.<\/p>\n

\u201cI saw a void in mentorship,\u201d she said. \u201cGirls didn\u2019t have relationships with mentors who reflected their experiences.\u201d<\/p>\n

That realization led to the creation of Empowerment Resources Inc., a nonprofit focused on supporting youth and families through tailored programs. One of its signature initiatives is Journey Into Womanhood,<\/a> a program designed to help girls navigate adolescence and build confidence.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe serve girls from across the region \u2014 Clay County, St. Johns County, and mostly Duval County,\u201d Coleman-Moss said.<\/p>\n

She believes representation is key to shaping how young girls see themselves and their future.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really important because teens today have a lot of influences \u2014 some positive, some negative,\u201d she said. \u201cWe want to be a source of encouragement and guidance.\u201d<\/p>\n
