The 33-year-old state lawmaker faces former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa in the race to succeed Democratic Mayor Eric Adams, who\u00a0abandoned his reelection bid\u00a0in recent days<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Mamdani has also been a vocal supporter of James, the city&#8217;s former public advocate. On Friday, he joined other local Democrats in denouncing the federal charges the attorney general now faces, calling the indictment a \u201cshameless act of political retribution&#8221; by President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, James \u2014 a longtime foe of Trump&#8217;s \u2014 was charged with bank fraud and making false statements to a financial institution stemming from a house she bought in Norfolk, Virginia, for $137,000 in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Federal prosecutors say the mortgage James obtained for the purchase required the house to be primarily for her personal use for one year. They say James broke that rule by renting the house out to a family of three.<\/p>\n<p>James and her lawyers haven\u2019t answered questions about the home purchase, but in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4BU92TpoQeQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">video statement last week<\/a>\u00a0she dismissed the charges as \u201cbaseless.\u201d She also decried the federal indictment as \u201cnothing more than a continuation of the president\u2019s desperate weaponization of our justice system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>James is expected to make her initial appearance in a federal court in Virginia on Oct. 24. If convicted of the felony charges, she would automatically relinquish her office\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/laws\/PBO\/30\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">under New York law<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Still, James has been fundraising off the indictment as she looks to reelection next year.<\/p>\n<p>As attorney general, James\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-fraud-new-york-letitia-james-lawsuit-a3a2c2569440c24bd5c5262103cb8390\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sued Trump and his administration<\/a>\u00a0dozens of times. She\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/donald-trump-civil-fraud-trial-feb0593a5bbd3837edc0db195554eda1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">won a large judgment<\/a>\u00a0against Trump and his companies last year in a suit alleging he defrauded banks by overstating the value of his real estate holdings on financial statements.
