LAS CRUCES, N.M. (KFOX14\/CBS4) \u2014 Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces is introducing a new genetic testing tool that can identify gene mutations passed down through families that could increase a person’s risk of developing cancer. <\/p>\n

Carla Hamilton, a nurse navigator, said the center will offer genetic testing to patients, particularly those undergoing screening mammograms. <\/p>\n

“It’s just an extra level of care that we’re able to provide,” said Hamilton.<\/p>\n

The testing begins with a digital assessment to identify patients at higher risk for hereditary cancers. If deemed high-risk, patients can undergo genetic testing on-site. <\/p>\n

The test evaluates 48 genetic mutations and can identify up to 11 hereditary cancers, including breast, colon, pancreatic, and prostate cancers, Hamilton said.<\/p>\n

Hamilton explained that the assessment is free, and while genetic testing is billed through insurance, 90% of patients incur no out-of-pocket costs. Patients are informed of any potential fees before testing proceeds.<\/p>\n

For those identified as high-risk, sharing results with their primary care provider is crucial. <\/p>\n

“They may do increased surveillance, increased screening tests, depending on their results,” said Hamilton. Options may include preventive medications or surgeries.<\/p>\n

The center is the only imaging facility in Las Cruces offering this service, which includes access to genetic counselors at no additional cost. “It’s a great opportunity for our patients,” Hamilton added, emphasizing the value of having genetic counseling available throughout the process.<\/p>\n
