One of Oregon\u2019s toughest post players is headed south down the west coast to play college basketball. <\/p>\n
On Monday evening, South Medford\u2019s Mayenabasi Akpan announced on social media that she is verbally committing to San Diego State. <\/p>\n
A 6-foot-2 post, Akpan has become one of the state\u2019s most feared players in the paint over the past couple of years. <\/p>\n
Akpan may have been the breakout player of the year in the 2023-24 basketball season, helping lead South Medford to a 26-3 record and the Class 6A state championship<\/a> as a sophomore. <\/p>\n In Akpan\u2019s first game in the Chiles Center (a 56-24 win against Southridge in the state quarterfinals) Akpan recorded a double-double with 19 points and 18 rebounds. Through the 2024 state championships, she averaged 17 rebounds per game. <\/p>\n In the 2024-25 season, Akpan helped lead the Panthers to a 22-6 record. In the state quarterfinals (a 47-37 loss to eventual state champion Tualatin) Akpan recorded a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double. <\/p>\n Akpan was an all-state honorable mention as a sophomore<\/a> and a first team all-state selection as a junior<\/a>. <\/p>\n She also had offers from Utah and Santa Clara. <\/p>\n Akpan is also a standout volleyball player. She was a first team all-state selection<\/a> last fall as a middle blocker and outside hitter. <\/p>\n San Diego State\u2019s women\u2019s basketball team went 25-10 in the 2024-25 school year.
