{"id":301920,"date":"2025-10-14T06:20:15","date_gmt":"2025-10-14T06:20:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/301920\/"},"modified":"2025-10-14T06:20:15","modified_gmt":"2025-10-14T06:20:15","slug":"canada-and-india-set-out-new-roadmap-for-relations-after-anand-meets-modi-foreign-minister","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/301920\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada and India set out \u2018new roadmap\u2019 for relations after Anand meets Modi, foreign minister"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a style=\"display:block\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/resizer\/v2\/FCV5N72ZSVHE5HFKHFTBNUYG2I.JPG?auth=eecebd0c8533fb564e61e276aa12cec9142837c5e281c7b7d14263b72b07c1e4&amp;width=600&amp;height=400&amp;quality=80&amp;smart=true\" aria-haspopup=\"true\" data-photo-viewer-index=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Open this photo in gallery:<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"figcap-text\">Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand, pictured last week in Parliament, met with her counterpart in New Delhi on Monday.Adrian Wyld\/The Canadian Press<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Political leaders in Canada and India are hailing a \u201cnew roadmap\u201d to reset relations between the two countries after Foreign Minister Anita Anand met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior ministers in New Delhi.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/global-affairs\/news\/2025\/10\/canada-india-joint-statement-renewing-momentum-towards-a-stronger-partnership.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/global-affairs\/news\/2025\/10\/canada-india-joint-statement-renewing-momentum-towards-a-stronger-partnership.html\">joint statement<\/a> on Monday from Ms. Anand and her counterpart, Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, outlines a number of specific measures the two countries plan to take \u201cto restore stability in the relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The road map follows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-india-canada-g7-alberta-modi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-india-canada-g7-alberta-modi\/\">a meeting Prime Minister Mark Carney had with Mr. Modi<\/a> on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Kananaskis, Alta., in June. Plans include further high-level discussions on bilateral trade and investment, co-operation on climate action and trade in oil and gas, partnerships on artificial intelligence as well as \u201crefreshed collaboration\u201d in higher education.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Ms. Anand visited Mr. Modi and Mr. Jaishankar as part of a multiday stopover before she heads to China to meet with that country\u2019s Foreign Minister. There she will aim<b> <\/b>to do further fence-mending and ease the economic pain from a trade spat that has targeted key sectors such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-canola-industry-tariffs-china-poilievre-carney\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-canola-industry-tariffs-china-poilievre-carney\/\">canola<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/canada\/article-canada-china-electric-vehicle-tariffs-canola-trade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/canada\/article-canada-china-electric-vehicle-tariffs-canola-trade\/\">electric vehicles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"display:block\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/resizer\/v2\/7F2O7GIY4JEIHAWM5S7I6RTVEY.JPG?auth=b0cce346e08c45c5ff8f7a3ce58c6fd7f05b3693f4b4578c1bc742acf51c4c29&amp;width=600&amp;height=400&amp;quality=80&amp;smart=true\" aria-haspopup=\"true\" data-photo-viewer-index=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Open this photo in gallery:<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"figcap-text\">Prime Minister Mark Carney and India&#8217;s Prime Minister Narendra Modi shake hands during the G7 Leaders&#8217; Summit in Kananaskis, Alta., June 17.Amber Bracken\/Reuters<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/india-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/india-canada\/\">Relations between Canada and India<\/a> reached a low point more than two years ago after Sikh separatist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-canada-modi-hardeep-singh-nijjar-killing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-canada-modi-hardeep-singh-nijjar-killing\/\">Hardeep Singh Nijjar<\/a> was shot dead in Surrey, B.C., and then-prime-minister Justin Trudeau publicly alleged that India\u2019s government was responsible. Indian leaders denied that accusation, and the resulting rupture<b> <\/b>sent dozens of Canadian and Indian diplomats home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Monday\u2019s 1,200-word joint statement gives a nod to Canada\u2019s insistence that such encroachments on its sovereignty must not happen again, citing \u201cmutual respect for shared democratic values, the rule of law, and a commitment to upholding the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">It also says Canada and India are keen to draw closer together to \u201cmitigate vulnerabilities arising from shifting global alliances,\u201d in an apparent reference to the pressure each country is facing from U.S. tariffs and President Donald Trump\u2019s efforts to upend global trade. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/commentary\/article-canada-india-economics-relations-reset\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Opinion: Canada and India must put economics at the heart of rapprochement<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The governments intend to promote \u201ctwo-way trade\u201d in liquefied natural gas, revive the Canada\u2013India CEO Forum to bring together business executives, and work on developing stable agricultural supply chains, among other initiatives outlined in the joint statement. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Peter Jones, a professor in the graduate school of public and international affairs at the University of Ottawa, called the statement \u201ca significant step\u201d that signals commitment to moving past the difficulties of recent years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cThis isn\u2019t just, \u2018Well, we\u2019d like to get along better.\u2019 This is a set of things they actually plan to do,\u201d he said in an interview. \u201cSo I think it obviously shows that people have been talking about this and working on it behind the scenes for some time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In a social-media post, Ms. Anand said Canada is working with India to revive a relationship \u201cgrounded in our ongoing law enforcement dialogue and growing economic partnership opportunities including in the areas of energy, trade and AI.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Mr. Jaishankar said in <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DrSJaishankar\/status\/1977636168641425668\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DrSJaishankar\/status\/1977636168641425668\">remarks from his meeting with Ms. Anand<\/a> in New Delhi that India\u2019s approach \u201cis to move forward with a positive mindset,\u201d and that \u201cIndia-Canada bilateral relations have been steadily progressing in the last few months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In recent weeks, each country reinstated high commissioners to the other, and after their national-security advisers met in New Delhi, India committed to co-operate and share information with Canadian police investigations. In late September, Ms. Anand also spoke with Mr. Jaishankar at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">A prominent advocate for a Sikh homeland in India, Inderjeet Singh Gosal, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-sikh-separatist-arrested-canada-india-smooth-ties\/#:~:text=A%20prominent%20advocate%20for%20a,rift%20in%20Canadian%2DIndian%20relations.\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-sikh-separatist-arrested-canada-india-smooth-ties\/#:~:text=A%20prominent%20advocate%20for%20a,rift%20in%20Canadian%2DIndian%20relations.\">arrested on firearm charges<\/a> in Ontario in September. The arrest made headlines in India, while Ottawa denied any involvement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">India also stayed quiet when Canada <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/world\/article-india-canada-relations-bishnoi-gang-terrorist-entity\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/world\/article-india-canada-relations-bishnoi-gang-terrorist-entity\/\">listed the Bishnoi gang as a terrorist entity<\/a>. Canadian police have linked the transnational criminal organization, which operates mostly out of India, to elements of the country\u2019s intelligence services. Members of Canada\u2019s Sikh community allege that the gang has targeted supporters of the separatist Khalistan movement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/canada\/article-bishnoi-gang-india-terrorist-organization-explainer\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">How a gang run from an Indian jail became listed as a terrorist group in Canada<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In Monday\u2019s joint statement, the two foreign ministers focused on building \u201cmomentum\u201d in their relationship, recognizing that \u201cin the context of ongoing global economic uncertainty and rising geopolitical tensions, a strong and resilient Canada-India bilateral relationship is essential.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Both Canada and India have fallen into Mr. Trump\u2019s crosshairs as the United States pushes a more protectionist vision for trade. Canadian officials are in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-carney-trump-us-tariff-negotiations\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-carney-trump-us-tariff-negotiations\/\">intensive negotiations<\/a> in Washington, seeking relief from high tariffs for key sectors such as steel, aluminum, automobiles and forestry products. And the U.S. targeted India with a 50-per-cent tariff on goods as apparent punishment for New Delhi\u2019s continued willingness to buy Russian oil and weapons, which help fund its expansionist war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">That economic pain appears to have acted as a catalyst to speed up the thaw in Canada-India relations, as countries around the world look to reduce their dependence on the U.S.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cEventually Canada and India would have found a way to go forward.
