The Road is Good: How a Mother\u2019s Strength Became a Daughter\u2019s Purpose<\/a> which explored how Aduba\u2019s mother shaped her success. <\/p>\n\u201cI think a huge piece of life \u2013 whatever industry you go into \u2013 is finding that support system,\u201d said Aduba. \u201cMy mom was my greatest cheerleader, and on many days, I really did not believe that this woman had the belief in me. Continue to pour into [your support system] so they pour into you.\u201d<\/p>\n
Publicist Rachel Karten described how special it was to witness Aduba\u2019s rise to stardom. When Aduba first met with the Orange is a New Black cast, Karten was confident Aduba would learn from talented actors. From once working to connect Aduba to prominent Hollywood figures to witnessing her become one of them, Karten said she knew Aduba was destined for greatness. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt was such a great group of women who were known as actors. And I\u2019m like, this is great for her to be around, and we\u2019re going to take advantage of that,\u201d said Karten. \u201c It\u2019s such an incredible cast of the top actors in their game. And Uzo is amongst them. <\/p>\n
And that was great to be at the premiere with you, to see you like up there with it\u2026You fit in perfectly, and it\u2019s like, where you were supposed to be.\u201d<\/p>\n
Karten discussed her career representing stars such as Aduba, Tracy Ellis Ross and Kathy Bates. She described the importance of understanding each of her clients\u2019 identities and cultivating a strong relationship rooted in vulnerability and honesty. This allows her to successfully support them in navigating the Hollywood industry.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen it comes to my job, Uzo is not working on her character. She has to be herself, and that is such a vulnerable place for every actor. They have to be so fully prepared for the hard questions that could come at them,\u201d said Karten. \u201cI feel like I am a chameleon with all of my clients, and I have a very specific personality with each of them.\u201d<\/p>\n
During the Q&A session, students asked Aduba and Karten about staying grounded and authentic to themselves in their creative pursuits. Aduba and Karten encouraged students to embrace themselves and find people to support in nurturing their gifts.<\/p>\n
\u201cFind the thing that you love that is not just a job. Be yourself, and try not to be like anybody else,\u201d said Karten. <\/p>\n
Aduba added that it is important for students to use college to embrace their uniqueness and build a network of people who can celebrate their milestones. <\/p>\n
\u201cAt a younger stage in life, it\u2019s easy to feel like your unique thing are hindrances rather than gifts. That thing you feel you want to shy away from \u2013 sit in it, embrace it. That\u2019s you,\u201d said Aduba. \u201cIf you\u2019re not working, find joy and inspiration in the thing you want to be doing, but also have that group of people..that will just kind of fuel you.\u201d<\/p>\n
Students asked how to maintain resilience while navigating the shifting Hollywood industry and decline in productions. Aduba encouraged students to invest in themselves and band together for growth. <\/p>\n
\u201cI encourage young people to take ownership of their own stories, to continue creating on their own and invest in themselves if they\u2019re working behind the scenes,\u201d said Aduba. \u201cContinue to invest in yourself, find other people who are like-minded, collaborate, and build together.
