SANTA CLARITA, Calif. — Former United States Senator and Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney’s sister-in-law was found dead on Friday evening next to a parking garage in the Town Center area of Santa Clarita, a suburb just north of Los Angeles, according to officials.<\/p>\n

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department told ABC News it is conducting a death investigation into the death of 64-year-old Carrie Romney of Valencia.<\/p>\n

Her cause of death was listed as “deferred” while toxicology tests were pending, the Los Angeles County medical examiner said.<\/p>\n

Preliminary information indicated she may have jumped or fallen from the garage, according to sources.<\/p>\n

The investigation remains ongoing and investigators are waiting for an official cause of death from the medical examiner.<\/p>\n

Mitt Romney ran for president twice, once in 2008 when he sought the Republican nomination but withdrew after the primaries, endorsing candidate John McCain. He ran again four years later in 2012, this time securing the Republican Party nomination, but lost in the general election against former President Barack Obama.<\/p>\n
