The other $400 million in cash is primarily related to contract cancellation fees and commercial settlements associated with EV-related investments, according to the filing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>GM was among the earliest to invest billions of dollars in an EV market that didn&#8217;t culminate.\u00a0At one point, the company was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/10\/07\/key-takeaways-from-general-motors-investor-day.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">planning to invest $30 billion<\/a> by this year in EVs, including dozens of new models and capacity for battery production.<\/p>\n<p>It also comes amid changing regulations regarding EVs \u2014 particularly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/10\/03\/tesla-gm-ev-sales.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the end of $7,500 in federal tax credits<\/a> \u2014 under the Trump administration as compared to President Joe Biden, who championed the vehicles.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Following recent U.S. Government policy changes, including the termination of certain consumer tax incentives for EV purchases and the reduction in the stringency of emissions regulations, we expect the adoption rate of EVs to slow,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/investor.gm.com\/node\/27881\/html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GM said in the filing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>GM&#8217;s EV writedown comes more than a year after crosstown rival <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/F\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ford Motor<\/a> announced a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/08\/23\/ford-ev-strategy-smaller-cars.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$1.9 billion impact<\/a> from its EV plans.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ford&#8217;s included about $400 million for the writedown of manufacturing assets, as well as additional expenses and cash expenditures <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/08\/21\/ford-delays-new-ev-plant-cancels-electric-three-row-suv.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">of up to $1.5 billion<\/a> that included canceling a large, electric three-row SUV that was already far in development and delaying production of its next-generation electric full-size pickup truck.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is breaking news.
