(It\u2019s anonymous!)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"3\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmgqkhgx5000hbdm6y63z3olv@published\"><strong>Dear Pay Dirt,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"8\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmgqkhgx5000ibdm6j780xfbm@published\">I made a colossal mistake concerning my retirement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"48\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmgqkpby5000a3b78zm9ou701@published\">When I started working full-time at 18, I got a great benefits package, including the option to invest in a simple IRA. In addition to the 3 percent employer match, I\u2019ve been making additional contributions, trying to increase my percentage a bit whenever possible, currently at 21 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"60\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmgqkpc0a000b3b78o36d59uu@published\">The advice I\u2019d always been given is that novice investors should never try to play the market, no attempts to buy low\/sell high or pick additional stocks, and that seemed very sound, as I have no experience in the field, so I just kept my hands off and assumed that the fund manager was doing whatever needed to be done.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"45\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmgqkpc29000c3b78hxb3kf5z@published\">Fast forward 20 years. Late this past February, I needed to visit a branch of the bank that holds the IRA on another matter. The manager I spoke with there accessed my account, did a double-take, and said something that made my blood run cold.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"10\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmgqksbbb00153b78guk89uwk@published\">Bank Manager: \u201cWhat\u2019s all this money doing sitting as cash?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"4\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmgqkpc4z000d3b78vq4ppzbg@published\">Me: \u201cIt\u2019s doing what???\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"40\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmgqkpc6w000e3b78i0x2jyld@published\">Yep. Apparently my strategy was too hands-off, there was no automatic investment into safe index funds as I assumed was happening, you have to actively put IRA money somewhere. So there\u2019s two decades of potential compound interest down the drain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"55\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmgqkpc90000f3b78zaa1jrfq@published\">My instinct was to correct that immediately, but on the advice of a friend, because of the political turmoil, I figured it couldn\u2019t make much difference to wait another couple months. I should have acted then, because the market\u2019s only trended up, although\u2026who knows for how much longer, because of course there\u2019s still political turmoil.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"69\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmgqkpcb8000g3b78x1zk0brz@published\">I\u2019ve now got $130,000 I need to do something with\u2014 just planning to go with my bank\u2019s S&amp;P index\u2014but since I\u2019m investing that big a chunk all at once as opposed to just a monthly contribution, buying when the market is strong seems like a bad idea. But at what point is that disadvantage outweighed by just starting to earn interest sooner? I don\u2019t want to make another mistake.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"2\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmgqkuffu001h3b78oeruknkt@published\">\u2014IRA Indecision<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"3\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmgqkpcft000h3b78g86xxuia@published\"><strong>Dear IRA Indecision,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"79\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmgqkpcid000i3b780qspzcwg@published\">I understand why you\u2019re terrified. You just discovered you lost 20 years of compound growth, and now you\u2019re paralyzed by the fear of making another devastating mistake. The thought of investing $130,000 all at once, when the market \u201cfeels high,\u201d makes it seem like you\u2019re just going to lose it all in a crash. You invest because you believe that the economy will be bigger and better in the future than it is today. There\u2019s never been a losing 20-year period. Stocks go up and down every day, which is why investing in index funds (a diversified basket of stocks that is designed to move with the market) is so popular.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"67\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmgqkrr72000x3b78lb6vvbjw@published\">Yes, the market has been exceptionally strong over the past few years. But, that doesn\u2019t mean it will collapse tomorrow. There will be downturns, sure, but no one knows when the downturn will happen, or when the market will recover and go even higher. While dollar-cost averaging works, so does lump sum investing. The point is, every day you wait is a day you\u2019re not earning returns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"79\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cmgqkrtec00113b782e5o3e45@published\">I know the fear of buying before a crash is visceral. If you absolutely cannot bring yourself to invest it all at once, split it into four monthly chunks and invest $32,500 each month for four months. But start this month<strong>.<\/strong> Don\u2019t wait for some perfect moment that will never come.<br \/>The real risk isn\u2019t investing when the market is high.
