Here\u2019s what changed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"byline\">by Matthew Sgroi, Fort Worth Report <br \/>October 14, 2025<\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;byline&quot;\">by Matthew Sgroi, Fort Worth Report <br \/>October 14, 2025<\/p>\n<p>All Northwest ISD students receiving dyslexia instruction are now identified through special education.<\/p>\n<p>Micah Gierkey, the district\u2019s executive director of student support services, told school trustees Oct. 7 that the district met new <a href=\"https:\/\/tea.texas.gov\/academics\/special-student-populations\/special-education\/texas-dyslexia-handbook.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Texas dyslexia guidelines<\/a> nearly a year before a May deadline.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Each student identified as having potential dyslexia now undergoes a full dyslexia evaluation and, if eligible, receives a plan that outlines the specific help in reading the child gets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the perfect month to share this update since October is Dyslexia Awareness Month,\u201d Gierkey told trustees.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The 33,500-student district identified 3,224 with dyslexia, including:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>1,904 who receive special education services.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>1,061 who receive classroom adjustments such as extra time on tests or reading assistance.<\/li>\n<li>259 who do not require additional support.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Northwest uses two multisensory reading programs \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/esc4.net\/readingbydesign\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reading by Design<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/mtspublications.com\/product-category\/mta-products\/multisensory-teaching-approach-mta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Multisensory Teaching Approach<\/a> \u2014 which engage students through visual, auditory, kinesthetic and tactile learning pathways.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Both are taught four to five times a week in small groups of six to eight students.<\/p>\n<p>Early screening remains central to the district\u2019s work, Gierkey said. Each year, Northwest screens all kindergarten and first-grade students to identify those who may need additional reading support or dyslexia services.<\/p>\n<p>During last year\u2019s screenings, Northwest referred 140 first graders in December and 73 kindergartners in the spring for further evaluation.<\/p>\n<p>District data shows that about 1 in 3 students in Northwest\u2019s dyslexia programs met grade level on reading, according to 2025 STAAR results. More than two dozen are pursuing advanced credentials as academic language therapists or practitioners.<\/p>\n<p>Superintendent Mark Foust said some in the community had raised concerns that changes to the dyslexia program meant serving fewer students. The opposite is true, Gierkey said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are serving them more efficiently,\u201d she said. \u201cWe looked at schedules and realized we could reach more students by grouping them appropriately and ensuring multiple staff on campus were trained to teach to those needs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matthew Sgroi is an education reporter for the Fort Worth Report.
