The veteran forward instead <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hoopsrumors.com\/2025\/06\/dorian-finney-smith-to-sign-four-year-contract-with-rockets.html\" rel=\"noopener\">agreed to<\/a> a four-year, $53MM deal with Houston.<\/p>\n<p>As Woike explains, the Lakers want to maintain as much future cap flexibility as they can in order to be able to pursue a star-level player to pair with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/doncilu01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.hoopsrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-07-01_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Luka Doncic<\/a><\/strong> following <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesle01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.hoopsrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-07-01_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">LeBron James<\/a><\/strong>\u2018 eventual retirement.<\/p>\n<p>That point has also been made by <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/45622365\/lakers-reach-2-year-12m-deal-jake-laravia\" rel=\"noopener\">ESPN\u2019s Dave McMenamin<\/a>, who writes that the Lakers want to preserve 2027 cap room in the hopes of landing a maximum-salary player, and by Shams Charania, who discussed the subject on SportsCenter late on Monday night (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ohnohedidnt24\/status\/1939907678970495085\">Twitter video link<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are really prioritizing two-year contracts right now,\u201d Charania said. \u201cThey want to have max-salary space in 2027.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>How that stance affects the Lakers\u2019 search for a center remains to be seen. While <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lopezbr01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.hoopsrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-07-01_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Brook Lopez<\/a><\/strong> committed to the Clippers on Monday and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/capelca01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.hoopsrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-07-01_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Clint Capela<\/a><\/strong> agreed to a deal with Houston, it\u2019s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/aytonde01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.hoopsrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-07-01_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Deandre Ayton<\/a><\/strong> who has been the team\u2019s top priority, according to Woike, who points out that Ayton and Doncic share the same agent (<strong>Bill Duffy<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>It sounds like the Lakers are unlikely to offer more than two years to Ayton, so if there\u2019s a rival suitor willing to put a longer deal on the table, that could be problematic for Los Angeles. However, I\u2019d be a little surprised if that\u2019s the case after his time in Portland ended via buyout.<\/p>\n<p>Woike points to the <strong>Bucks<\/strong> as one team to watch for Ayton, noting that they should have access to most of the non-taxpayer mid-level exception and lost their starting center (Lopez) on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s more on the Lakers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>ESPN\u2019s Dave McMenamin spoke on NBA Today on Monday about where things stand with James following agent <strong>Rich Paul<\/strong>\u2018s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hoopsrumors.com\/2025\/06\/lakers-lebron-james-opting-in-for-2025-26.html\" rel=\"noopener\">Saturday statement<\/a> about evaluating \u201cwhat\u2019s best for LeBron\u201d as the star forward opted into the final year of his contract.\u00a0\u201c(Paul) has not had any discussion with the Lakers about wanting a trade, on the back end of this statement,\u201d McMenamin said (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/K_424Jvuxhs?feature=shared&amp;t=358\" rel=\"noopener\">YouTube link<\/a>). \u201cHe did say that four teams have contacted him in the last 24 hours wanting to take trades, but Rich didn\u2019t have any substantive conversations with those teams either. Right now, LeBron is focused on playing on a championship-caliber roster. Rich told me there\u2019s no guarantees in building a championship-caliber roster, but we know what it looks like and what it doesn\u2019t look like. And we\u2019ll see if in a week from now \u2013 when <strong>Rob Pelinka<\/strong>\u2018s finished doing his work with this roster \u2013 if it looks like a winning, realistic situation.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>According to Jovan Buha (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/dru_star\/status\/1939892802793382254\">Twitter video link<\/a>), the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hoopsrumors.com\/2025\/06\/trade-rumors-lakers-wiggins-knicks-celtics-cavs-bulls.html\" rel=\"noopener\">rumored<\/a> trade talks between the Lakers and <strong>Heat<\/strong> about <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/wiggian01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.hoopsrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-07-01_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Andrew Wiggins<\/a><\/strong> haven\u2019t gained any real momentum due to a \u201cpretty high\u201d asking price on Miami\u2019s end. \u201cWe\u2019re talking basically everything or close to everything that the Lakers could offer from a top-end asset standpoint,\u201d Buha said. \u201cSo I don\u2019t think that is going to happen. I don\u2019t think the Lakers are trading <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hachiru01.html\" rel=\"noopener\">Rui (Hachimura)<\/a><\/strong>, a first, and <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/k\/knechda01.html\" rel=\"noopener\">Dalton (Knecht)<\/a><\/strong> for Andrew Wiggins. That\u2019s not fair value. That\u2019s not a realistic trade. I think Miami\u2019s playing hardball. We\u2019ll see if they soften their stance.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6464748\/2025\/07\/01\/lakers-free-agency-nba-doncic-ayton\/\" rel=\"noopener\">League sources tell Woike<\/a> that <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/l\/laravja01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.hoopsrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-07-01_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jake LaRavia<\/a><\/strong>, who <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hoopsrumors.com\/2025\/06\/lakers-to-sign-jake-laravia.html\" rel=\"noopener\">agreed<\/a> to a two-year, $12MM deal with the Lakers on Monday, was the team\u2019s first call when free agency opened, and that the free agent forward was impressed by the way Pelinka sold the Lakers\u2019 strength and <strong>JJ Redick<\/strong>\u2018s \u201cdetailed\u201d plan for how he would be used.
