While some young Aussies have been able to successfully get ahead without the help of mum and dad, an economist has warned the looming $5.4 trillion inheritance transfer is set to create a bigger division between the haves and the have-nots.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">More than half of Gen Z\u2019s (55 per cent) and nearly half of Millennials (49 per cent) think what you <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/inheritance-myth-costing-aussies-150000-nasty-surprise-190007083.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:inherit;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inherit<\/a> is now more important than how hard you work when <a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/tradies-impossible-property-realisation-leads-him-to-growing-co-ownership-trend-get-in-now-005357662.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:trying to get ahead;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trying to get ahead<\/a> in this country. It\u2019s definitely worrying if 50 per cent of people now see that they have to <a data-i13n=\"cpos:11;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/grim-property-solution-facing-millions-of-aussies-030036104.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:wait for their parents to pass away;cpos:11;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wait for their parents to pass away<\/a> to get some money as the way to achieve financial security. That\u2019s not good for our society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\"><strong>Do you have a story to share? <\/strong><a data-i13n=\"cpos:12;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/mailto:tamika.seeto@yahooinc.com\" data-ylk=\"slk:Contact tamika.seeto@yahooinc.com;cpos:12;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Contact tamika.seeto@yahooinc.com<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Stake CEO Matt Leibowitz said today\u2019s economy meant goalposts for young people were \u201calways shifting\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cPlans that worked in the past may fail today, and people are rightly questioning how to get ahead when the old rules no longer apply,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Leibowitz said younger people who are actively <a data-i13n=\"cpos:13;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/construction-worker-earning-160000-at-24-reveals-fire-plans-to-retire-at-40-aggressive-190018268.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:investing;cpos:13;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">investing<\/a> have a more optimistic outlook, with Stake\u2019s research finding investors who don\u2019t yet own a home were nearly twice as likely as non-investors to feel they could afford one without an inheritance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Sunshine Coast couple Brittany and Cody Roberts have three properties worth $3.7 million and were able to do it without the help of the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:14;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/aussie-homebuyers-warned-over-glaring-480000-issue-with-the-bank-of-mum-and-dad-obvious-trade-off-003751557.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Bank of Mum and Dad;cpos:14;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bank of Mum and Dad<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">The couple, aged 28 and 35, said investing, buying at a good time and utilising government grants had helped them <a data-i13n=\"cpos:15;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/aussie-couples-150000-mortgage-move-in-growing-bank-of-mum-and-dad-trend-going-to-see-a-lot-more-004941516.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:get ahead financially;cpos:15;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">get ahead financially<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Cody told Yahoo Finance the couple scraped together $35,000 to buy their first property, a $505,000 terrace, at the end of 2020. They used a 5 per cent deposit and first-home owner grants and stamp duty exemptions, so they could buy with the \u201cbare bones\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cOur savings process was using, at that time, a micro investing app and dollar-cost averaging into index funds as our way to make it a little less liquid, a little bit harder to access,\u201d Cody, who works as a sales manager for a home builder, said.<\/p>\n<p>  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/ywAAAAAAQABAAACAUwAOw==\" alt=\"Brittany and Cody Roberts and Stake CEO Matt Leibowitz\" loading=\"lazy\" height=\"517\" width=\"960\" class=\"yf-1gfnohs loader\"\/> Brittany and Cody Roberts (left) bought their first property in 2020 with a 5 per cent deposit and used investments to help do it. (Source: Supplied)    <\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">The couple purchased their second home, a house and land package for $570,000, after \u201c18 months of hard saving\u201d. They also released the equity in their first home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">They moved into this home in 2023, turning their first home into an investment property. In mid-2024 they purchased their third property, a duplex for $770,000, again using savings and equity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Brittany, who runs her own marketing agency, said the couple were not expecting to receive an <a data-i13n=\"cpos:16;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/major-inheritance-change-as-older-aussies-stop-leaving-their-money-to-kids-disillusioned-062230489.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:inheritance from their parents;cpos:16;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inheritance from their parents<\/a>. She said they had been \u201csurprised\u201d by how much they had been able to achieve.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cThat only made us want to work harder in a way, to continue to progress with that,\u201d she told Yahoo Finance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Cody acknowledged it had become harder for young people to get ahead if they didn\u2019t have some kind of leg up. \u201cBut that doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s out of reach,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Finder research earlier this year found 41 per cent of Aussies were <a data-i13n=\"cpos:17;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/young-aussie-shares-how-she-bought-tiny-property-in-growing-inheritance-trend-its-tough-003415948.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:expecting an inheritance;cpos:17;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expecting an inheritance<\/a>. Of those 19 per cent said it would \u201csignificantly\u201d improve their financial situation, while 10 per cent said they were relying on it for major goals like a house deposit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Separate data from the Australian Housing Monitor found nearly two-thirds of Aussies thought the only way they would ever be able to buy a home was if they received a <a data-i13n=\"cpos:18;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/tactic-impulsive-22-year-old-uni-student-used-to-buy-half-a-million-dollar-home-not-rich-parents-045151195.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:large inheritance;cpos:18;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">large inheritance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">As it happens, Think Forward economist Thomas Walker and his partner both worked full-time jobs with good incomes, but they were only able to purchase their first home, an apartment in Melbourne, because of an inheritance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cI got an inheritance in 2022 because I lost my mum and my parents were divorced, so her super didn\u2019t go to my dad. (Source: Think Forward\/AAP)    <\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">This gave him enough money for a <a data-i13n=\"cpos:19;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/aussie-mum-breaks-money-taboo-after-life-changing-inheritance-three-times-my-yearly-wage-032644319.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:home deposit;cpos:19;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">home deposit<\/a> and allowed him to resign from his well-paying job to pursue something he was passionate about.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cI was able to get into home ownership and do something I love because this awful thing happened to me. If that hadn\u2019t happened, I would still be renting and really stressed about my financial situation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Walker said this can feel \u201cincredibly unfair\u201d, especially when he sees many of his friends are yet to get onto the property ladder.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cI\u2019d obviously rather be where they are because they have both their parents. It doesn\u2019t feel right that work isn\u2019t enough any more,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\"><a data-i13n=\"cpos:20;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/insane-time-it-takes-common-aussie-jobs-to-save-up-home-deposit-dream-is-dead-001457838.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Parliamentary Library analysis released by the Greens;cpos:20;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Parliamentary Library analysis released by the Greens<\/a> last year found it would take a primary school teacher 12 years to save up a 20 per cent deposit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">A child care worker would need a whopping 31 years, while a registered nurse would need 11 years, based on projected house prices and earnings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">The Productivity Commission previously estimated that $3.5 trillion would be passed on from Aussies aged 60 and over by 2050. More recent JBWere figures put the figure at <a data-i13n=\"cpos:21;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/inheritance-warning-ahead-of-54-trillion-transfer-as-avoidable-money-traps-exposed-200046438.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:$5.4 trillion;cpos:21;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$5.4 trillion<\/a> over the next 20 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cThere is this gigantic amount of wealth, which is held by the Baby Boomers, which is going to be passed on over the next 10, 20 years, which is just going to divide younger generations between those who got a big inheritance and those that didn&#8217;t,\u201d Walker said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cI think people are really clocking onto that over the last couple of years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Think Forward has been advocating for an <a data-i13n=\"cpos:22;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/controversial-10-billion-push-to-tax-inheritance-in-australia-once-in-a-generation-opportunity-012147559.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:inheritance tax;cpos:22;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inheritance tax<\/a>, with 73 per cent of young people it surveyed backing the idea for estates worth more than $1 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cWe need to change the tax system so it stops rewarding wealth holders over workers, like the capital gains tax discount, negative gearing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cBut there is so much wealth stored in the Boomer generation and in property that there is going to be these really big inequality impacts that we need to think about taxing that money when it\u2019s passed on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Walker said using the funds raised to collectively invest in things younger generations need, such as making university and TAFE cheaper or building more affordable housing, could be the key.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cI think we have to get there. Otherwise, we\u2019re going to have really terrible outcomes. It\u2019s going to tear at our social fabric,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cWe can\u2019t have a society built on who your parents are.
