{"id":304791,"date":"2025-10-15T07:36:18","date_gmt":"2025-10-15T07:36:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/304791\/"},"modified":"2025-10-15T07:36:18","modified_gmt":"2025-10-15T07:36:18","slug":"la-county-officials-approve-emergency-declaration-over-immigration-raids-nbc-los-angeles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/304791\/","title":{"rendered":"LA County officials approve emergency declaration over immigration raids \u2013 NBC Los Angeles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Los Angeles County officials voted Tuesday to declare a state of emergency that gives them power to provide assistance for residents they say have suffered financially from ongoing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/supreme-court-immigration-stops-los-angeles-trump-57cc1f85ceafda0f11052b326c8b7173\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">federal immigration raids<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The move allows the LA County Board of Supervisors to provide rent relief for tenants who have fallen behind as a result of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/bovino-border-patrol-immigration-los-angeles-chicago-03b908a84106fae80a80b2837625eef7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">crackdown on immigrants<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The immigration raids that ramped up over the summer have spread fear in immigrant communities, prompting many to limit their outings. Federal agents have rounded up\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ice-immigration-raids-detainee-families-los-angeles-651d8bba4752553a67eb53db084677b2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">immigrants<\/a>\u00a0without legal status to be in the U.S. from Home Depots, car washes, bus stops,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/immigration-raids-marijuana-farm-southern-california-arrests-ead862824a6e994fdfd5297aa1cd6c79\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">and farms<\/a>. Some U.S. citizens have also been detained.<\/p>\n<p>The local state of emergency can also funnel state money for legal aid and other services.<\/p>\n<p>Funds for rent will be available to people who apply via an online portal that would be launched within two months, Supervisor Lindsey Horvath&#8217;s office said. The motion could also be a first step toward an eviction moratorium, but that would require a separate action by the supervisors.<\/p>\n<p>Landlords worried it could be another financial hit after an extended ban on evictions and rental increases during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>The declaration was passed by a 4-1 vote, with Supervisor Kathryn Barger opposing.<\/p>\n<p>Horvath and Supervisor Janice Hahn said\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ice-immigration-raids-detainee-families-los-angeles-651d8bba4752553a67eb53db084677b2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the raids<\/a>\u00a0have spread fear and destabilized households and businesses. In late August, there were more than 5,000 arrests in Los Angeles as part of the crackdown. About a third of the county\u2019s 10 million residents are foreign-born. Several cities in the region\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/july-fourth-4th-holiday-protests-celebrating-cancel-e0a5789143de4e51a0548d0535145aaf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">canceled their Fourth of July<\/a>\u00a0celebrations and summer movie nights as families stayed home due to safety concerns.<\/p>\n<p>Since June, the Los Angeles region has been a battleground in the Trump administration\u2019s aggressive immigration strategy that spurred protests and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/immigration-protests-raids-los-angeles-78eaba714dbdd322715bf7650fb543d7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">deployment of the National Guards<\/a>\u00a0and Marines for more than a month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have residents afraid to leave their homes, we have constituents contacting my office because their family members never came home and they don\u2019t know if they\u2019ve been taken by ICE or where they\u2019ve been taken,\u201d Hahn said. \u201cWe have entire families who are destitute because their fathers or mothers have been taken from their work places and they have no way to pay their rent or put food on their table.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last week the five-member board voted 4-1 to put the declaration up for a vote at its regular Tuesday meeting. The sole \u201cno\u201d vote also came from Barger, who argued that the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/immigration-raids-los-angeles-trojan-horse-penske-1b86bc5f2ff716b89f4aba3320a96979\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">immigration raids<\/a>\u00a0did not meet the criteria of an emergency and that it could be unfair to landlords.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sure we\u2019re going to be challenged legally,\u201d Barger said. The county&#8217;s eviction moratorium during the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/eviction-moratorium-pandemic-landlords-housing-oakland-37e9db9dda02240cc560301f3311a92b\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">COVID-19 pandemic<\/a>\u00a0resulted in multiple lawsuits.<\/p>\n<p>Several people said they were against the emergency declaration if it would lead to an eviction moratorium during the public comment portion of Tuesday\u2019s vote.<\/p>\n<p>Landlords are \u201cstill reeling\u201d from the COVID-era freezes that cost them \u201cbillions of dollars in uncollected rent and prohibited annual rent increase,\u201d said Daniel Yukelson, CEO of the Apartment Association of Greater Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>He said housing providers are sympathetic to tenants and their family members affected by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement activities.
