(ABC News: John Gunn)<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Sad reality for young Aussies&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Australian National University demographer Liz Allen said her research showed the downward trend was not purely driven by &#8220;free choice&#8221;, but that the barriers to achieving that much-wanted family were &#8220;insurmountable&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;When we ask in surveys what people&#8217;s intended or desired number of children, what they say is generally higher than what they achieve,&#8221; Dr Allen said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;In other words, couples don&#8217;t tend to have the number of children they desire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Total fertility rates are not a problem in their own right. (ABC News: Luke Stephenson)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Housing affordability, economic security, gender inequality and climate change were the four big things that were not being earnestly tackled by government, Dr Allen said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She said Australia was faced with declining total fertility rates that were well below the replacement level and have been since the mid-1970s.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Allen said in Sydney and Melbourne, as examples, families looking for affordable housing to establish a family were being pushed to the fringes of cities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The total fertility rates are lower in the cities than they are outside the city limits, and that&#8217;s because housing is far more affordable,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The ABS is projecting that by the mid-2050s, deaths will outnumber local births.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We can&#8217;t afford to have kids&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Cassie Tweddle is one of many Australians not having kids because of the cost of living and housing affordability.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The 33-year-old hairdresser said she always wanted a family to grow old with, like she did with her parents now.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A young couple smiling\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/b44b29a03ccf4a38b66710db87a23087\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Cassie Tweddle (right) and her partner Ben say they cannot afford to have kids. You can&#8217;t afford to buy a house, commute to work, and pay for childcare,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We rent, and to have kids, we would need to move into a bigger place, which we couldn&#8217;t afford, plus having children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;My parents would have to move closer because my wage would go to childcare.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;For us to have kids, house prices would have to come down, the cost of living has to come down.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Barriers for same-sex couples<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Same-sex couples faced even greater costs and barriers on their journey to start a family, Dr Allen said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-05-18\/birthrates-women-fertiliy-rates-children-population-growth\/103849978\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Why women are choosing not to have babies<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">For decades, women in Australia have been told they should have more children for the good of the country, but\u00a0 there&#8217;s many reasons why more are choosing to stay child free.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Earlier this year, <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-04-09\/solo-mum-sarah-says-changes-to-subsidised-ivf-a-huge-win\/105146774\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the federal government committed to providing Medicare rebates for LGBTIQ+ couples and single people<\/a> accessing assisted reproductive technology.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;re in uncharted territory when we think about the increasing rates of egg freezing. Of course, none of the conversations that we&#8217;ve had talk about non-heteronormative couples,&#8221; Dr Allen says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;On one hand, technological improvements aid a whole range of family types, but policy and the costs associated with that healthcare have not kept pace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s a conundrum of outdated surrogacy laws and the funding for various medical treatments for those who do require IVF.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>How other countries are tackling declining birth rate<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In an attempt to reverse the steady 12-year decline of Poland&#8217;s birth rate, hoteliers reward clients who conceive babies in its hotels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A Polish real estate company, the Arche group, which owns 23 hotels across the country, launched an incentives program offering &#8220;free special events&#8221;, such as a baptism, to clients who can prove that &#8220;the conception&#8221;
