{"id":30515,"date":"2025-07-01T18:21:08","date_gmt":"2025-07-01T18:21:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/30515\/"},"modified":"2025-07-01T18:21:08","modified_gmt":"2025-07-01T18:21:08","slug":"piece-of-fireball-meteor-that-fell-from-sky-over-north-georgia-going-on-display-wsb-tv-channel-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/30515\/","title":{"rendered":"Piece of \u2018fireball\u2019 meteor that fell from sky over north Georgia going on display \u2013 WSB-TV Channel 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">BARTOW COUNTY, Ga. \u2014 The explosive meteorite blasted into the skies over Georgia with a sonic boom, maybe you saw it on video or social media.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">But soon you\u2019ll be able to see a chunk of the Georgia meteorite in person. <a href=\"https:\/\/tellusmuseum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/tellusmuseum.org\/\">Tellus Science Museum<\/a> in Cartersville is acquiring a piece for display that a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsbtv.com\/news\/local\/henry-county\/tellus-science-museum-astronomer-discusses-meteorite-landing-metro-atlanta\/B35JOOYFHVDYZCUKU444Z4GIP4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.wsbtv.com\/news\/local\/henry-county\/tellus-science-museum-astronomer-discusses-meteorite-landing-metro-atlanta\/B35JOOYFHVDYZCUKU444Z4GIP4\/\">meteorite hunter found<\/a> in Henry County.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\"><b>[DOWNLOAD:\u00a0<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsbtv.com\/smart-tv\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks<\/b><\/a><b>]<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">Curatorial Coordinator Rebecca Melsheimer says this rock shows the process of the meteor\u2019s entry into our atmosphere. One side is from the inside of the meteor, and it appears gray and irregular, showing \u201ca fresh break, this is the first time anybody\u2019s ever seen this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">The other side is what makes this rock so special, it shows what Melsheimer calls the \u201ctrial by fire,\u201d the burn marks that formed the outer crust.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">\u201cYou can see the exact lines of the fusion crust, from just barreling through our atmosphere, really impressive to look at,\u201d Tellus Astronomer Karisa Zdanky says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">Zdanky says it\u2019s billions of year old, and could be from outside our solar system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\"><b>Channel 2\u2019s Linda Stouffer<\/b>\u00a0put on gloves to hold it \u2013 and said it\u2019s heavier than it looks. Scientists say that\u2019s because of the metal content. In person, the meteorite has a little sparkle to it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">Tellus is creating an exhibit to add to their meteorite and mineral collection. The new specimen should be on display for the public later this summer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">Researchers are documenting the fragments and expect to eventually determine the kind of rock it is.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">The meteorite at Tellus is one of the larger chunks found so far: 150 grams, and 2&#215;3 inches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 gJuxXh body-paragraph\">NASA says the meteor heard and seen throughout the Southeast was traveling at 30,000 miles per hour.
