She was joined by renowned civil rights attorneys Ben Crump and Harry Daniels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><b>WATCH: Press play in the video player below to watch a replay of the news conference<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Following the incident, McGriff is facing charges of battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting an officer with violence and operating a vehicle with a revoked license. I then went to pick up my daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">McGriff said she was just trying to keep her daughter from getting drenched in the rain while walking home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThat\u2019s all,\u201d she said. \u201cEverything that happened &#8212; that was just uncalled for, and it was not fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">According to the Jacksonville Sheriff\u2019s Office, what happened was that a verbal confrontation between McGriff and JSO Officer Randy Holton turned physical as the officer attempted to arrest McGriff.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">According to Crump, what happened was a clear case of excessive force by JSO. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThe type of force used on Erika McGriff &#8212; the chokeholds, the hair grabbing, being punched with closed fists in the face, having a knee put on her neck &#8212; should be reserved for armed and dangerous criminals who are a threat to the public and our safety,\u201d Crump said. \u201cBut not for mothers who are doing their part to go pick up their daughter from school so she won\u2019t get rained on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">Crump, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news4jax.com\/news\/local\/2025\/09\/08\/attorneys-for-man-arrested-in-viral-traffic-stop-to-file-federal-lawsuit-against-officer-city-of-jacksonville\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.news4jax.com\/news\/local\/2025\/09\/08\/attorneys-for-man-arrested-in-viral-traffic-stop-to-file-federal-lawsuit-against-officer-city-of-jacksonville\/\">who is also representing William McNeil Jr. in a use-of-force lawsuit against JSO<\/a>, called it a disturbing pattern.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWe are here in Jacksonville, Florida, once again in opposition to the Jacksonville Sheriff\u2019s Office for what appears to be a pattern and practice of excessive use of force against Black motorists for minor traffic violations,\u201d Crump said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">He later made a comment directed at Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWe want good policing. We don\u2019t want you to protect and serve everybody else and assault and batter us. We just want equal justice under the law; nothing more, nothing less,\u201d Crump said. \u201cSheriff Waters, we\u2019re not asking for anything more than you would give to the white citizens here in Jacksonville. That\u2019s all the Black community is asking for, nothing more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Crump said he and Daniels will be arguing to get the charges against McGriff &#8212; and two women charged with Halo Law misdemeanor violations &#8212; dropped.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cFirst things first, we want these women to not be convicted of these bogus charges,\u201d Crump said. \u201cAttorney Daniels and I are exploring every possible legal avenue to hold the Jacksonville Sheriff\u2019s Office accountable, but more importantly, we don\u2019t want to have to keep coming back to have Black people being brutalized and killed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">News4JAX asked JSO for comment about the comments made in the news conference. I\u2019m going to give you one chance. The two continue grappling, and McGriff again ends up on the ground, and Holton grabs her by her hair.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">At one point, he is able to get behind McGriff and wrap his arm under her chin in a headlock.
