For the full story and other PBJ coverage, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/portland\/news\/2025\/10\/13\/pdx-airport-warn-layoff-hospitality-travel.html?ana=kgw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">click here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>More than 150 workers at Portland International Airport will be laid off next month, according to a notice filed under Oregon&#8217;s Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification act, or WARN.<\/p>\n<p>The 157 affected workers are employed by <a href=\"https:\/\/ccwd.hecc.oregon.gov\/Layoff\/uploads\/LOT9357\/WARN%209357%20Bags,%20A%20Metropolis%20Company%20-%20Portland.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bags, a California-based travel hospitality company<\/a>. The terminations are due to Bags\u2019 contract with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/portland\/organization\/alaska-airlines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Alaska Airlines<\/a> not being renewed and will be effective Nov. 17.<\/p>\n<p>Bags, owned by Metropolis Technologies, did not immediately reply to a Business Journal request for comment. The WARN notice said \u201cthe new company awarded the contract will extend offers of employment to the current employees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The roles affected are largely for wheelchair agents, with 141 being eliminated. All of the employees are represented by a union. The notice also said that the company \u201cremain(s) unsure if and when (it) will again staff its positions with Alaska Airlines at PDX.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bags operates in almost 300 cities globally, and offers travel hospitality services to hotels, convention centers, airlines and retailers like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/portland\/organization\/walmart\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Walmart<\/a> and Sam\u2019s Club, according to its website.<\/p>\n<p>The layoffs come as travel through PDX has been increasing.<\/p>\n<p>The airport has had a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/portland\/news\/2025\/10\/10\/portland-airport-arrivals.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">6.9% year-over-year growth in passenger arrivals<\/a> in 2025, according to recent Bureau of Transportation Statistics data. From January to May 2025, PDX had 3.18 million arrivals, an increase of 204,000 from 2025, according to a Localsinsider.com study.<\/p>\n<p>Cond\u00e9 Nast Traveler also recently named\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/portland\/news\/2025\/10\/07\/portland-ranks-among-best-cities-by-tourists-2025.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Portland as the fourth-best U.S. big city<\/a> in a reader poll.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The affected workers are employed by Bags, a California-based travel hospitality company.
