WASHINGTON (TNND) \u2014 President Donald Trump tapped former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Dr. Ben Carson<\/a> as a senior national advisor for Nutrition, Health and Housing at the U.S Department of Agriculture (USDA)<\/a> to Make America Healthy Again (MAHA). <\/p>\n

Carson, who is a retired neurosurgeon, said the MAHA movement is crucial right now because of the \u201cmassive\u201d amounts of unhealthy conditions in the U.S., including obesity, mental health issues, as well as the \u201cexplosion\u201d of autism.<\/p>\n

Carson said autism cases recently increased from 1 in 4,000 to 10,000, to 1 in 36. <\/p>\n

That\u2019s a massive increase. That\u2019s not a coincidence. There\u2019s obviously something going on in sour society, which needs to be looked at,” he told The National News Desk\u2019s Jan Jeffcoat during a one-on-one interview on Wednesday.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

We also look at the fact that our life expectancy is going in the wrong direction, whereas any other industrialized nation continues to increase. That tells us, once again, that there\u2019s something going on. We\u2019re putting artificial sweeteners, colors, all kinds of things, into our foods without paying close attention to what they\u2019re doing. And one of the things that we\u2019re looking at is what\u2019s going on in some of the places that are also industrialized nations, but where their life expectancies are continuing to go up. We don\u2019t have to reinvent the wheel; we just have to pay attention to what\u2019s going on,” he added.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
