{"id":305764,"date":"2025-10-15T16:15:17","date_gmt":"2025-10-15T16:15:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/305764\/"},"modified":"2025-10-15T16:15:17","modified_gmt":"2025-10-15T16:15:17","slug":"arlington-isd-dedicates-new-36-million-stadium-to-former-trustee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/305764\/","title":{"rendered":"Arlington ISD dedicates new $36 million stadium to former trustee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Michael Glaspie spent nearly 30 years serving the community and students after becoming Arlington ISD\u2019s first Black school board member.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Now, his legacy will stand for generations after the district named its latest high school stadium after him. School and city officials, including Mayor Jim Ross, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Oct. 9 for the Michael Glaspie Field Athletic Complex.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2024\/09\/09\/arlington-isd-makes-headway-on-projects-funded-by-nearly-1-billion-bond\/#:~:text=The%20bond%20funds,Seguin%20High%20School.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$36 million stadium<\/a> was funded as part of a nearly $1 billion bond package that voters approved in 2019. The field features 10,000 seats, state-of-the-art LED lights and a large press box.<\/p>\n<p>Glaspie stood at the 50-yard line of the new turf field and thanked the community for allowing him to serve.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of my favorite quotes is by Shirley Chisholm: \u2018Service is the rent we pay for the life we live on this earth,\u2019\u201d Glaspie said. \u201cThat\u2019s the one thing I\u2019ve been trying to do, make sure I pay my rent on my way through.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The stadium is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/high-school-sports\/football\/2025\/10\/01\/why-the-stadium-arms-race-in-north-texas-has-cooled-drastically\/#:~:text=ADVERTISEMENT-,The%20Dallas%20area%20had%2028%20new%20high%20school%20stadiums%20open%20from,that%20translates%20on%20the%20field%20halfway%20through%20the%202025%20regular%20season.,-ADVERTISEMENT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one of only four built<\/a> in DFW since 2020. This comes as voters become more reluctant to vote for school bond packages, with local examples including a <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2024\/12\/10\/mansfield-isd-makes-headway-on-nearly-600m-2024-bond-package\/#:~:text=Voters%20rejected%20the,upgrading%20athletic%20complexes.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">majority vote against<\/a> Mansfield ISD\u2019s athletic renovations in 2024 and the <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2021\/11\/02\/voters-ok-1-2-billion-to-improve-fort-worth-isd-campuses-reject-3-propositions-calling-for-upgraded-extracurricular-facilities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rejection of parts<\/a> of Fort Worth ISD\u2019s 2021 bond.<\/p>\n<p>The stadium, designed by Fort Worth-based VLK Architects, was built on top of Martin High School\u2019s practice field.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The stadium hosts both Martin and Seguin high schools.<\/p>\n<p>Superintendent Matt Smith said stadiums like the new Michael Glaspie Field Athletic Complex impact the community and students more than some may think.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we talk about the Friday night experience in school districts, there are hundreds of kids involved,\u201d Smith said. \u201cFrom our athletic trainers, to our bands, our cheer, our drill teams, to the football teams and the special performances that happen here as well. The impact on the kids is amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smith said that watching Glaspie speak during the dedication ceremony was special because the stadium exemplified what Glaspie stood for as a trustee.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve gotten to know Michael Glaspie in the past time I\u2019ve been here in Arlington ISD, and seeing this project come to life really represents what he always worked for as a trustee in the school district, and that was about creating amazing experiences for kids,\u201d Smith said. \u201cThis is a culmination of that.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Glaspie, a Vietnam veteran, has served on the pastoral staff at Mount Olive Baptist Church in Arlington since 1982 and was elected to the school board in 1991. He served as a trustee until 2008. (Courtesy photo | Arlington ISD)<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the ceremony, Glaspie said that the stadium was not just an honor for him.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is something that symbolizes the service my family has given to education,\u201d Glaspie told the audience. \u201cI did a rough calculation between my generation, the generation before me.
