Previously, he anchored KFI\u2019s weekend \u201cMo Kelly Show\u201d for more than a decade after joining the historic Los Angeles station in 2011. <\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Kelly\u2019s last night on the air was Oct. 6. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI gave it everything I had,\u201d O\u2019Kelly said in an interview Tuesday, adding that he was proud that his show \u201cwas a true representation of what I wanted talk radio to be. &#8230; I wanted to bring voices of people less often heard, viewpoints less often expressed and communities less often featured.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s unclear how many people KFI cut beyond O\u2019Kelly, his producer and a marketing manager. Host Chuck Dizzle also <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DPhxDGWkk3Z\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced on Instagram<\/a> that he\u2019d been cut after 10 years from iHeart\u2019s Los Angeles hip-hop station KRRL-FM, which brands itself as \u201cReal 92.3.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/barrettmedia.com\/2025\/10\/13\/what-current-and-former-iheartmedia-employees-are-saying-after-latest-round-of-layoffs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News reports<\/a> suggest the layoffs  <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/radioinsight.com\/headlines\/310755\/layoffs-ongoing-at-iheartmedia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">were part of larger company-wide restructuring<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Separately, Karen Sharp, host of \u201cLove Songs on the Coast\u201d at sister station KOST-FM (103.5), retired Friday after <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DPpn1RhkTZF\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">38 years playing love-song dedications<\/a> \u2014 once a sweet spot for  radio programmers. \u201cYou shared your breakups with me, wedding proposals, the passing of a family member,\u201d Sharp told listeners in her final sign-off. \u201cMost of all, you shared your heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Los Angeles division president of iHeart Media referred The Times\u2019 query to the firm\u2019s New York corporate office, which did not immediately comment.<\/p>\n<p>The moves comes nearly a year after <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/story\/2024-11-12\/kfi-am-640-layoffs-radio-station-iheartmedia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">iHeart Media gutted KFI\u2019s newsroom<\/a>, laying off more than half of the newsroom, including the station\u2019s longtime news director. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s troubled time for local media as newspapers, TV and radio stations grapple with a dramatic loss of advertising revenue amid consumers shifting to digital media, including YouTube and podcasts. <\/p>\n<p>Public radio was hard hit this summer after <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/story\/2025-07-17\/socal-public-media-outlets-brace-for-federal-funding-cuts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Congress eliminated $1.1 billion<\/a> that had been previously allocated for this year and 2026. Local stations LAist\/KPCC-FM (89.3), KCRW-FM (89.9) and PBS affiliates KCET and KOCE saw millions of dollars of expected funds vanish.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/story\/2025-08-01\/trump-funding-cuts-public-broadcasting-shuts-down\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Corp. for Public Broadcasting<\/a>, which had spent decades administering funds for more than 1,500 PBS TV affiliates and NPR radio stations, shut down amid the pullback.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe volatility has always been there, but it\u2019s even more pronounced now,\u201d O\u2019Kelly said of commercial radio. \u201cThe future of AM radio as we know it is coming to an end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe idea of having to use a broadcast transmitter of 50,000 watts is early 20th century technology,\u201d he said. \u201cPeople can get in their car and they can listen to anything, anyone, anywhere, and at any time, thanks to Bluetooth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Garrett Searight, an Ohio-based journalist who covers the radio industry, noted that KFI\u2019s posted further ratings declines in September, representing more audience erosion for what used to be one of L.A.\u2018s strongest news stations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you look at the Mt. Rushmore of Los Angeles radio stations, KFI is either up there or it deserves to be,\u201d Searight said. \u201cIt\u2019s not a great sign for the industry overall when one of the gold-standard stations is struggling like KFI is.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>In addition to KFI and KOST, iHeart Media owns six other stations in Los Angeles, including the sports channel KLAC-AM (570) and music station KIIS-FM (102.7). <\/p>\n<p>Since early last week, fill-in hosts have been substituting for O\u2019Kelly. <\/p>\n<p>Bob Pittman, a former top executive at MTV and, later, AOL Time Warner, leads iHeart Media. Six years ago, the company, previously known as Clear Channel, emerged from a Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceeding  designed to restructure more than $10 billion in debt, reducing its obligations to $5.75 billion. <\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s prebankruptcy $16.1-billion debt load was a vestige of its 2008 private equity leveraged buyout.<\/p>\n<p>In August, iHeart reported a 5.4% decline in quarterly revenue to $545 million for its multiplatform unit, which includes the company\u2019s more than 800 radio stations. Total revenue was $934 million.<\/p>\n<p>The company has a growing podcast business, producing such shows as \u201cStuff You Should Know,\u201d \u201cQuestlove Supreme\u201d and \u201cDrama Queens.\u201d It also co-produces Shonda Rhimes\u2019 Shondaland Audio, which includes \u201cThe Laverne Cox Show,\u201d and podcasts with the NFL and NBA.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of last year, the company had 10,100 employees nationwide, according to its annual report. That marks a 10% decline compared  with the end of 2019. <\/p>\n<p>Dizzle, the REAL 92.3 host, said in his Instagram video that he\u2019d wanted to work in radio since he was 10. But, after a decade, he was no longer employed by iHeart Media where his show played in L.A. and nationally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a good run,\u201d Dizzle said, adding that he was grappling with a mix of emotions \u201cbut mainly [I\u2019m] relieved. &#8230; If you work in radio, you know, any day could be your day no matter what the situation is. &#8230; I\u2019m just grateful for the opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll jobs end. It is not our lives or our health,\u201d O\u2019Kelly wrote last week in a Facebook post, announcing his show\u2019s cancellation. \u201cThere is nothing to be sad about here.
