And on Wednesday, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovenia and Finland among others were poised to finalize a fifth package, according to three NATO diplomats, who like others quoted in this story were granted anonymity to speak freely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThanks to funding from allies, we are providing Ukraine with critical U.S. equipment,\u201d NATO chief Mark Rutte <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nato.int\/cps\/en\/natohq\/opinions_238506.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> as alliance defense ministers met in Brussels. \u201cAnd today, we heard from ally after ally about new contributions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But that growing support is also leaving those who haven\u2019t contributed \u2014 such as the U.K. and France \u2014 in an increasingly tight spot.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In total, 20 NATO allies have now pledged support for the scheme, Swedish Defense Minister P\u00e5l Jonson told POLITICO.<\/p>\n<p>Now, however, \u201cthere are expectations there should be fair burden sharing, and those who haven&#8217;t committed themselves need to do it.\u201d he said. Relying exclusively on existing donor countries for more cash \u201cis unsustainable in the long run,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFair burden sharing is something we [have] all been waiting [for],\u201d Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur told POLITICO, \u201cand as was said many times today \u2026 helping Ukraine today is a security guarantee also for us.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Canada, Germany and the Netherlands have pledged $2 billion in four separate PURL packages.
