{"id":306823,"date":"2025-10-16T01:39:16","date_gmt":"2025-10-16T01:39:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/306823\/"},"modified":"2025-10-16T01:39:16","modified_gmt":"2025-10-16T01:39:16","slug":"former-uconn-star-ashley-battle-named-to-portland-fire-front-office","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/306823\/","title":{"rendered":"Former UConn star Ashley Battle named to Portland Fire front office"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former UConn women\u2019s basketball star <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cbb\/players\/ashley-battle-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ashley Battle<\/a> was named Vice President of Basketball Operations, Strategy and Innovation for the <a href=\"https:\/\/fire.wnba.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Portland Fire<\/a>, who will begin play as an expansion franchise in the WNBA next season.<\/p>\n<p>Battle, who won the Big East Defensive Player of the Year award in 2003, was a three-time national champion at UConn, and a key cog in the Huskies\u2019 early 2000s teams with Diana Taurasi and Sue Bird.<\/p>\n<p>The 43-year-old joins the Fire after serving as Assistant General Manager for the Maine Celtics, the NBA G League affiliate of the Boston Celtics, and as a scout for the Boston Celtics. She also recently served as a color commentator for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courant.com\/sports\/wnba\/connecticut-sun\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Connecticut Sun<\/a> games on NBC Sports Boston.<\/p>\n<p>In her new role, Portland said Battle will oversee basketball operations, including roster construction and talent identification, while \u201cimplementing innovative strategies across player performance and analytics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s exciting to be part of a franchise that\u2019s reimagining what player development and team culture can look like,\u201d Battle said in a release. \u201cHaving been in the players\u2019 shoes, I know how powerful it is when an organization invests in every aspect of an athlete\u2019s growth.
