{"id":306994,"date":"2025-10-16T03:09:11","date_gmt":"2025-10-16T03:09:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/306994\/"},"modified":"2025-10-16T03:09:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-16T03:09:11","slug":"group-of-legacy-health-medical-professionals-vote-in-favor-of-possible-strike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/306994\/","title":{"rendered":"Group of Legacy Health medical professionals vote in favor of possible strike"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3UEGGCKCM5GCBIGTOB33T5OXAY\">About 135 medical professionals at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/health\/2025\/02\/legacy-health-nurses-at-3-portland-hospitals-vote-to-unionize.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Legacy Health<\/a> have overwhelmingly voted in favor of authorizing a strike.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5MATPVF34BDJ5L4OWVPM7XTV6U\">The workers \u2014 a group of advanced practice providers that includes nurse practitioners, physician associates and clinical nurse specialists \u2014 work across Legacy\u2019s hospitals and clinics in Oregon and southwest Washington. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3E3S57PPKRGMPAZSDZAIYFF4HU\">Officials with the Oregon Nurses Association, the union that represents the workers, said the workers have been trying to negotiate a new contract since they unionized over a year ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RLNMWQARLZH3HPNETQZIG5OW3U\">The vote allows workers to call a strike at any time, though they have to give Legacy management at least 10 days\u2019 notice before any walkout. Union leaders said they plan to meet with Legacy negotiators Thursday and next week, and that \u201cstriking is a last resort.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FWUSLRTEBJA7HDIKFRSH5DLBMU\">Advanced practice providers say they remain at odds with Legacy leadership over pay and working conditions. A major sticking point, they said, is the amount of uncompensated administrative and nonclinical work they are expected to do \u2014 a workload they say contributes to burnout and high turnover.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JX6O6FLDLNB6BJPUNUQ5HA3WYA\">\u201cWe need a contract that protects our professional boundaries and recognizes the time we actually devote to our patients,\u201d Leigh Warsing, a physician associate on the bargaining team, said in a statement. She said physician associates working in the trauma department routinely work beyond their 12-hour shifts, spending an extra hour handing off patients and responding to emergencies without pay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DXMIM5LJMZCKBAPORGGIRIOJW4\">\u201cIn the trauma department, after finishing a 12-hour shift, we often spend another hour updating the incoming PA\u2014unpaid. If an emergency arises, we stay late but are not compensated for that time either. That\u2019s no way to treat your employees.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4MLGW5XSTJHVXBMZSFDKIK225U\">Leigh Warsing, a physician associate on the bargaining team, said advanced practice providers at Legacy make less than their peers at other health care systems in the region, which makes it difficult to recruit and retain enough staff.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LNGK6XYDPBAA3K7BRJP3YV6UZE\">Legacy officials said in an email statement that they \u201ccontinue to engage in good faith bargaining\u201d with the union and hope to reach an agreement that benefits workers and patients.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"M3CUIMR32FEXPO2SO35IPTCUDY\">The potential strike comes amid a wave of labor actions across Oregon\u2019s health care sector. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CJUFV4O6EZFVRBQLZNIUWQUNV4\">On Tuesday, some 4,000 nurses and other health care workers at Kaiser Permanente in Oregon and southwest Washington <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/health\/2025\/10\/4000-kaiser-permanente-workers-in-oregon-sw-washington-walk-off-the-job.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">began a five-day strike<\/a>. Earlier this year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/health\/2025\/01\/thousands-of-providence-workers-walk-out-in-states-largest-health-care-strike-in-oregon-history.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nearly 5,000 Providence health workers<\/a> at all eight Providence hospitals across the state held a 46-day strike that concluded in February. <\/p>\n<p>If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
