PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — A dazzling fireworks display illuminated the night sky over the Delaware River on Wednesday, marking the grand finale of the Navy and Marine Corps 250th Celebration.<\/a><\/p>\n

The “Homecoming 250” fireworks show, originally delayed due to weather earlier in the week, drew crowds to both sides of the River for a vibrant celebration of military history and service.<\/p>\n

“We’ve really enjoyed our stay here, and this is the icing on the cake for us,” said Jacquelin Wilkinson of Liverpool, England.<\/p>\n

Throughout the week, Philadelphia honored service members with a series of events across the city. Festivities included a parade down Market Street<\/a> on Monday and a “Victory at Sea” concert on Sunday<\/a>, headlined by Philadelphia native and music legend Patti LaBelle.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, families gathered at Penn’s Landing and Camden for live music and entertainment. Organizers noted the historical significance of the location, where the Navy and Marines launched some of their earliest ships.<\/p>\n

In Camden, performances by the Second Division Marine Band and the Quantico Marine Band kept spirits high, while across the river, the Navy’s premier country bluegrass ensemble entertained crowds at Penn’s Landing.<\/p>\n

“We were part of the parade on Monday. I’m a reservist in the National Guard, so it’s just been great to see the military celebrated all around,” said Bennett Opitz of South Philadelphia. “This obviously leads up to the nation’s 250th next summer, so we’re just super excited to have the Navy and Marine Corps in the city and everybody celebrating this city’s history.”<\/p>\n

Off-duty sailors and Marines took time to explore Philadelphia and experience its hospitality.<\/p>\n

“I really appreciate Philadelphia for being as friendly as they are. I’ve never been to a city that is just so welcoming,” said Brandon Phillips-Sealy of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., who serves in the U.S. Navy.<\/p>\n

“This is really cool for me, a new experience. I’ve never (seen) anything like this,” said Allen Benton of the USS Billings, visiting from Myrtle Beach, S.C. “I also got to be part of the parade, which is really cool. I ended up trying one of those Philly steaks and they’re really good. Overall, I love it.”<\/p>\n

The week’s events served not only as celebrations but also as heartfelt tributes to those who serve, past and present. Veterans and active-duty members expressed appreciation for the community’s support.<\/p>\n

“People have been coming up to us saying ‘thank you for your service,’ and that’s special,” said Steve Cross of San Diego, Calif.<\/p>\n

Philadelphia’s deep ties to military history were on full display throughout the week, as the city welcomed service members and honored its legacy with pride.<\/p>\n
