{"id":30789,"date":"2025-07-01T20:45:11","date_gmt":"2025-07-01T20:45:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/30789\/"},"modified":"2025-07-01T20:45:11","modified_gmt":"2025-07-01T20:45:11","slug":"brits-warned-taking-popular-painkiller-abroad-could-land-you-in-jail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/30789\/","title":{"rendered":"Brits warned taking popular painkiller abroad &#8216;could land you in jail&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A pharmacist has urged holidaymakers to check the rules on taking a drug which is popular in the UK, but regulated or banned in other countries<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1_Generic-man-taking-tablets.jpg\" alt=\"Sick man wrapped in a blanket sitting on the sofa at home, holding a pill in one hand and a glass of water in the other, about to take medicine\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>This medication can be bought over the counter, while stronger versions are available with a prescription(Image: RealPeopleGroup via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A pharmacist has issued a stark warning to the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/travel\/news\/essential-travel-document-brits-must-35451529\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">millions of Brits<\/a> who regularly take a medicine that is either banned or heavily regulated in several countries, including Greece and France. <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/health\/nhs-gp-says-taking-painkillers-35382299\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Co-codamol<\/a>, which is a mixture of paracetamol and codeine, can be purchased in shops and is also prescribed to 3.5 million people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/uk-news\/common-painkiller-recalled-amid-fears-24331961\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">The medicine is available<\/a> in three strengths, the lowest of which contains 8g of codeine to 500mg of paracetamol and can be purchased without a prescription. Higher doses (those with 15g and 30g of codeine) are available only with a doctor&#8217;s authorisation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Despite its popularity in the UK, the drug is considered illegal in Greece and is obtainable only with a prescription. It is entirely prohibited in Ethiopia, and possession of it in the United Arab Emirates or China could land you in prison.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">In Thailand, it is classified as a category 2 narcotic. In Indonesia, Qatar, Singapore and Japan, it is either regulated or banned without specific licences or forms. It will explain exactly what you can \u2013 and can&#8217;t \u2013 bring into the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;It&#8217;s always best to be safe and check before you travel, so that you have all the essential medication you need to make sure your holiday is as enjoyable as possible.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Peter also offered guidance on how to transport medications when flying: &#8220;Always keep your medication in your hand luggage, in its original packaging with the prescription label intact. Security staff may need to verify it, especially if it&#8217;s liquid or regulated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;If you&#8217;re unsure, ask your doctor or pharmacist for a supporting letter.
