{"id":308912,"date":"2025-10-16T20:15:12","date_gmt":"2025-10-16T20:15:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/308912\/"},"modified":"2025-10-16T20:15:12","modified_gmt":"2025-10-16T20:15:12","slug":"judge-orders-agents-in-chicago-area-to-wear-body-cameras-after-violent-clashes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/308912\/","title":{"rendered":"Judge orders agents in Chicago area to wear body cameras after violent clashes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CHICAGO (AP) \u2014 Troubled by <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/chicago-immigration-federal-arrests-helicopter-trump-ice-8dbf688f78f3b6d1b8fdb989557b28c4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">clashes between agents and the public<\/a>, a judge on Thursday ordered federal immigration officers in the Chicago area to wear body cameras and also summoned a senior official to court next week to discuss an enforcement operation that has resulted in more than 1,000 arrests.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. District Judge Sara Ellis said she was a \u201clittle startled\u201d after seeing TV images of street confrontations that involved tear gas and other tactics during President Donald Trump\u2019s administration\u2019s immigration crackdown in the nation\u2019s third-largest city.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI live in Chicago if folks haven\u2019t noticed,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd I\u2019m not blind, right?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Community efforts to oppose U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement have ramped up in Chicago, where neighborhood groups have assembled to monitor ICE activity and film incidents involving agents. More than 1,000 immigrants have been arrested <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/immigration-chicago-trump-arrests-dd9c7e57fe829665d722c6755dcafd09\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">since September<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>An immigration enforcement building in Broadview, outside Chicago, as been the site of regular protests. The Trump administration has tried to deploy National Guard troops in Illinois, in part to patrol at the Broadview location, but the strategy was <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/national-guard-trump-chicago-portland-court-b5d227814d775159eb9c3814779b3ae3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">halted last week<\/a> by a different federal judge. <\/p>\n<p>Ellis last week said agents in the area must wear badges, and she banned them from using certain riot control techniques against peaceful protesters and journalists. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m having concerns about my order being followed,\u201d the judge said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am adding that all agents who are operating in Operation Midway Blitz are to wear body-worn cameras, and they are to be on,\u201d Ellis said, referring to the government\u2019s name for the crackdown.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Justice Department attorney Sean Skedzielewski laid blame with \u201cone-sided and selectively edited media reports.\u201d He also said it wouldn\u2019t be possible to immediately distribute cameras.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand that. I would not be expecting agents to wear body-worn cameras they do not have,\u201d Ellis said, adding that the details could be worked out later.<\/p>\n<p>She said cameras would provide evidence to back up how agents handle confrontations with protesters. Ellis said the field director of the enforcement effort must appear in court Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Gov. JB Pritzker praised the judge\u2019s ruling, saying the government\u2019s statements about arrests and other incidents, including <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/chicago-ice-illinois-immigration-shooting-29eec5d07aef36b32fc8e03e8948c836\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">last month\u2019s fatal shooting<\/a> of a suburban Chicago man, have often been inaccurate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey clearly lie about what goes on,\u201d he told reporters. \u201cIt\u2019s hard for us to know right away what the truth is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, Immigration and Customs Enforcement began deploying about 1,600 body cameras to agents assigned to Enforcement and Removal Operations.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, officials said they would be provided to agents in Baltimore, Philadelphia, Washington, Buffalo, New York and Detroit. Other Homeland Security Department agencies require some agents to wear cameras.
