{"id":308942,"date":"2025-10-16T20:30:14","date_gmt":"2025-10-16T20:30:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/308942\/"},"modified":"2025-10-16T20:30:14","modified_gmt":"2025-10-16T20:30:14","slug":"10-recent-shootings-involving-phoenix-police-cause-outcry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/308942\/","title":{"rendered":"10 recent shootings involving Phoenix police cause outcry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PHOENIX \u2014 The recent wave of shootings involving Phoenix police officers sparked public outrage shortly before the Phoenix City Council convened on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Several community advocacy groups, including Black Lives Matter and Poder in Action, gathered to decry the shootings and call for change.<\/p>\n<p>Monica Varrientos, an organizer with Poder in Action, called for Phoenix Police Chief Matt Giordano to implement reforms that will reduce police violence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the two months since Chief Giordano started, there have been 10 shootings by Phoenix police,\u201d Varrientos said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is one shooting every six days. Six of these shootings have resulted in the death of our neighbors, our family members, our friends. This is the highest rate of shooting since 2018, the year the department shot 44 people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Phoenix Police Department\u2019s newest chief took office after DOJ dropped report<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ktar.com\/arizona-news\/matt-giordano-phoenix-police-chief\/5737873\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Giordano took office<\/a> in August, a few months after the Trump administration\u2019s Department of Justice (DOJ) <a href=\"https:\/\/ktar.com\/arizona-news\/phoenix-police-department-doj\/5708314\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">dropped its civil rights investigation<\/a> into the Phoenix Police Department.<\/p>\n<p>Under former President Joe Biden\u2019s administration, the <a href=\"https:\/\/ktar.com\/arizona-news\/doj-investigation-of-phoenix-police-department-finds-civil-rights-violations-longstanding-dysfunction\/5576864\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">DOJ released a scathing report<\/a> that found patterns of egregious civil rights violations in June 2024.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/crt\/media\/1355866\/dl?inline=&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=govdelivery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">The DOJ found<\/a> that the department regularly used unjustified excessive force, unlawfully detained people experiencing homelessness, targeted people of color, violated rights of protesters and discriminated against people with behavioral health disabilities, according to then-Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Kristen Clarke.<\/p>\n<p>In May, President Donald Trump\u2019s DOJ said its Civil Rights Division retracted findings and closed probes of six police departments, including Phoenix\u2019s, that were launched under the Biden administration.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement to\u00a0KTAR News 92.3 FM, a police spokesperson said the department is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phoenix.gov\/administration\/departments\/police\/crime-stats-data\/transparency.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">committed to being transparent<\/a> about shootings involving Phoenix police officers.<\/p>\n<p>The department <a href=\"https:\/\/stories.opengov.com\/phoenixaz\/published\/26IwcDHW8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">maintains an online dashboard<\/a>\u00a0the public can use as a resource for shootings involving police.<\/p>\n<p>What changes do community groups want to see from Phoenix police?<\/p>\n<p>The organizers called for various changes, including faster release of body-camera footage. They also called for more investments in community safety and a passage of a Family Bill of Rights that would empower victims of police violence.<\/p>\n<p>One speaker at the event, Ahmed Wali with Mass Liberation Arizona, called for funds to be redirected to various community resources.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe demand a permanent freeze on police budget increases, and that those dollars be redirected to what actually keeps communities alive, like housing, like healthcare and like youth services,\u201d Wali said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe demand full investment in community-led alternatives, community crisis responses and mutual aid programs led by the people most impacted,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>KTAR News 92.3 FM\u2019s Heidi Hommel contributed to this report.<\/p>\n<p>We want to hear from you.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Have a story idea or tip?
