{"id":309620,"date":"2025-10-17T02:39:13","date_gmt":"2025-10-17T02:39:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/309620\/"},"modified":"2025-10-17T02:39:13","modified_gmt":"2025-10-17T02:39:13","slug":"zelenskyy-seeks-us-air-defenses-after-russias-energy-facility-attacks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/309620\/","title":{"rendered":"Zelenskyy seeks US air defenses after Russia&#8217;s energy facility attacks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>KYIV, Ukraine (AP) \u2014 Russia battered Ukraine\u2019s energy facilities with hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles in its <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-war-gas-energy-power-grid-ec2b9a311762b18955cfe969b067ff48\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">latest heavy bombardment<\/a> of the country\u2019s power grid, authorities said Thursday, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy prepared to ask President Donald Trump at a White House meeting for more American-made <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-war-trump-zelenskyy-weapons-31e8d494c92300524a0f50cebff28f7d\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">air defenses and long-range missiles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As he considers Zelenskyy\u2019s push for U.S. missiles, Trump said after Thursday\u2019s call with Russian President Vladimir Putin that they will meet in Budapest, Hungary to try to bring the war to an end. No date for the meeting has been set.<\/p>\n<p>Trump said in a post on Truth Social that he will discuss his call with Putin \u201cand much more\u201d when he meets Zelenskyy on Friday, adding that \u201cI believe great progress was made with today\u2019s telephone conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, eight Ukrainian regions experienced blackouts after the barrage, Ukraine\u2019s national energy operator, Ukrenergo, said. DTEK, the country\u2019s largest private energy company, reported outages in the capital, Kyiv, and said it had to stop its natural gas extraction in the central Poltava region due to the strikes. Natural gas infrastructure was damaged for the sixth time this month, Naftogaz, Ukraine\u2019s state-owned oil and gas company, said.<\/p>\n<p>Russia fires hundreds of drones and 37 missiles<\/p>\n<p>Zelenskyy said Russia fired more than 300 drones and 37 missiles at Ukraine overnight. He accused Russia of using <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ukraine-russia-war-cluster-bombs-putin-2905bfce423a21a87f5ddb43fd419c69\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cluster munitions<\/a> and conducting repeated strikes on the same target to hit emergency crews and engineers working to repair the grid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis fall, the Russians are using every single day to strike our energy infrastructure,\u201d Zelenskyy said on Telegram.<\/p>\n<p>The Ukrainian power grid been one of Russia\u2019s main targets since its invasion of its neighbor more than three years ago. Attacks increase as the bitterly cold months approach in a Russian strategy that Ukrainian officials call \u201cweaponizing winter.\u201d Russia says it aims only at targets of military value.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine has hit back by <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-gasoline-shortage-ukraine-war-2c1364fd199fa594f67ad097d6761814\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">targeting oil refineries<\/a> and related infrastructure that are crucial for Russia\u2019s economy and war effort. Ukraine\u2019s general staff said Thursday its forces struck Saratov oil refinery, in the Russian region of the same name, for the second time in two months. The facility is located some 500 kilometers (300 miles) from the Ukrainian border. Moscow made no immediate comment on the claim.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine seeks air defenses and attack missiles<\/p>\n<p>Ukrainian forces have resisted Russia\u2019s bigger and better-equipped army, limiting it to a grinding <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-war-territory-control-timeline-9eb40089dfb402d273b47b7930199d89\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">war of attrition<\/a> along the roughly 1,000-kilometer (600-mile) <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-war-donetsk-kostiantynivka-kramatorsk-6155c773ce5c43ed3a6b6905194d76da\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">front line<\/a> snaking through eastern and southern regions.<\/p>\n<p>But Ukraine, which is almost the size of Texas, is hard to defend from the air in its entirety, and Kyiv officials are seeking more Western help to fend against aerial attacks and strike back at Russia.<\/p>\n<p>Zelenskyy was expected to arrive in the United States on Thursday, ahead of his Oval Office meeting with Trump on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine is seeking cruise missiles, air defense systems and joint drone production agreements from the United States, Kyiv officials say. Zelenskyy also wants tougher international economic sanctions on Moscow.<\/p>\n<p>The visit comes amid signs that Trump is leaning toward <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-zelenskyy-putin-russia-ukraine-e3a1d62d2a24f459aa6dbbfa940e1067\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stepping up pressure<\/a> on Russian President Vladimir Putin to break the deadlock in U.S.-led peace efforts.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Wednesday in Brussels that if <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-trump-summit-ukraine-war-2afea5988bdaca94cae39b7f86fa59ba\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Russia won\u2019t budge<\/a> from its objections and refuses to negotiate a peace deal, Washington \u201cwill take the steps necessary to impose costs on Russia for its continued aggression.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Also, Trump said Wednesday that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally assured him that his country would stop buying Russian oil.
