WLOS<\/p>\n<p>It was also used by the National Security Agency as a key satellite communications hub during the Cold War, according to the listing.<\/p>\n<p>The campus, dubbed the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute, sprawls across 192 acres and features more than 30 buildings \u2014 including a welcome center, library, exhibits, a retrofitted 200-person cafeteria, and dorms to house the staff.<\/p>\n<p>The campus includes 192 acres of land surrounded by half a million more acres of protected forests. Piedmont Triad<\/p>\n<p>The property also comes readily equipped with an array of antiquated scientific and technological assets, including 25 optical telescopes, a planetarium, dish antennas, data centers, laboratories, and radio arrays, according to the listing.<\/p>\n<p>To top it off, a breathtaking 500,000 acres of protected woodlands that are part of the  Pisgah National Forest in Transylvania County are also included in the $30 million. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of us are excited about it just because we\u2019ve never seen anything like it and probably never will,\u201d Robbie Perkins, Market President at NAI Piedmont Triad, told <a href=\"https:\/\/wlos.com\/news\/local\/nasa-pari-rosman-north-carolina-nai-piedmont-triad-pisgah-astronamical-research-institute-library-housing-dining-facilities-lab-research-educational-stem-earth-space-cold-war-satellite-communications-hub-optical-telescopes-planetarium-antennas-data-ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-nyp-affiliate=\"true\">WLOS<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Perkins said that the government spent approximately $250 million constructing the facility during the 1960s, which would translate to roughly $2.7 billion today, according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.minneapolisfed.org\/about-us\/monetary-policy\/inflation-calculator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-nyp-affiliate=\"true\">inflation calculator<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The campus was used during the Space Race against Russia. WLOS<\/p>\n<p>It comes complete with more than 30 buildings, including dorms used by the former staff.  Piedmont Triad<\/p>\n<p>The campus, however, isn\u2019t just sitting and collecting dust. It is currently owned and operated by a non-profit that uses it for STEM education, research, data archiving, facility rentals, events, and private programs, according to the listing.<\/p>\n<p>Perkins said he\u2019s already received interest from buyers worldwide, but didn\u2019t specify any big names.<\/p>\n<p>Any would-be owner would need to be approved by the PARI Board of Directors and the North Carolina Attorney General.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"It\u2019s an out-of-this-world opportunity!
