{"id":310034,"date":"2025-10-17T06:23:11","date_gmt":"2025-10-17T06:23:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/310034\/"},"modified":"2025-10-17T06:23:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-17T06:23:11","slug":"a-tiny-peptide-can-freeze-parkinsons-proteins-before-they-turn-toxic-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/310034\/","title":{"rendered":"A Tiny Peptide Can Freeze Parkinson&#8217;s Proteins Before They Turn Toxic : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/parkinsons-disease\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Parkinson&#8217;s disease<\/a> progresses, harmful protein clumps build up in the brain, blocking communications between neurons and killing them off \u2013 but what if we could prevent these clusters from forming?<\/p>\n<p>Researchers led by a team from the University of Bath in the UK have achieved just that in a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Caenorhabditis_elegans\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">basic worm model<\/a> of  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/go\/IYl\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73029\" data-postid=\"176557\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Parkinson&#8217;s<\/a>. They engineered a peptide, a small amino acid chain, to essentially keep a protein called alpha-synuclein locked in its healthy shape. This <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Protein_folding\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">prevented the misfolding<\/a> that leads to clumps.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/parkinsons-discovery-suggests-we-could-have-an-fda-approved-treatment-already\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">potential treatment<\/a> checks several important boxes: it&#8217;s durable, and it can survive inside cells without causing any toxic side effects.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/parkinsons-disease-could-be-ignited-by-burned-out-brain-cells\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Parkinson&#8217;s Disease Could Be Ignited by Burned-Out Brain Cells<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This opens an exciting path towards new therapies for Parkinson&#8217;s and related diseases, where treatment options remain extremely limited,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/announcements\/bath-scientists-design-peptide-switch-that-keeps-parkinsons-protein-in-its-healthy-form\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> biochemist Jody Mason, from the University of Bath.<\/p>\n<p>The study follows on from <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.xcrp.2023.101563\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">previous work<\/a> by some of the same researchers, which identified part of the alpha-synuclein protein that may stop it building to dangerous levels. This key part or fragment acts like a guide for the protein to follow.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ProteinDiagram.jpg\" alt=\"Peptide and protein diagram\" width=\"642\" height=\"476\" class=\"wp-image-176560 size-full\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The team used a shortened peptide to make sure alpha-synuclein proteins behaved. (Meade et al., JACS Au, 2025)<\/p>\n<p>That fragment was then cut down into the smallest possible size to form the new peptide tested here. The researchers also added extra stability to their peptide molecule, using chemical structures called <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lactam\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lactam bridges<\/a> to stop it from breaking down.<\/p>\n<p>Crucially, the peptide created by the researchers can patrol cells and prevent misfolding without interfering with the normal, healthy job that alpha-synuclein is there for: regulating neurotransmitter signaling chemicals <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/dopamine-doesnt-work-in-our-brains-quite-the-way-we-thought\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">such as dopamine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our work shows that it is possible to rationally design small peptides that not only prevent harmful protein aggregation but also function inside living systems,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/announcements\/bath-scientists-design-peptide-switch-that-keeps-parkinsons-protein-in-its-healthy-form\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> Mason.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the challenge of finding effective <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/parkinsons-discovery-suggests-we-could-already-have-an-fda-approved-treatment\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">treatments for Parkinson&#8217;s<\/a>, and other diseases like it, is that it can be difficult to disentangle the causes of the condition from the consequences \u2013 are alpha-synuclein protein clumps appearing because of the effects of Parkinson&#8217;s, for example, or helping to drive its progression?<\/p>\n<p>With that in mind, the treatment outlined here seems preventative.
