36-year-old Odon Bustos was shot to death at the Ramada and Travelodge Inns off Highway 90 near West Military. Police say he was taunting officers before yelling, \u201cI\u2019m not going back to prison,\u201d then allegedly firing at them.<\/p>\n

“I want to extend my deepest gratitude to the officers who went out there to address the scene,” said Councilman Ric Galvan.<\/p>\n

The two officers, both shot in the arm, are expected to recover. But employees working nearby say they\u2019re worried about what\u2019s next after the latest violence at a location that\u2019s seen 55 calls to 911 since January.<\/p>\n

“It\u2019s not like this everywhere. It\u2019s specifically this area, this building, that seems to be where all the action is coming from,” said Tyler Daper, a barber at Morals Barbershop.<\/p>\n

Councilman Ric Galvan, who represents District 6, says he\u2019s working to bring Stand Up SA, a violence-prevention program run by Metro Health, to the West Side.<\/p>\n

“How can we solve this with other holistic services, whether it\u2019s educational, workforce, etc., but that kind of outreach is needed,” said Galvan.<\/p>\n

Galvan says he\u2019s also spoken with the police chief about what can be done using law enforcement in the area. Daper says he\u2019d like to see more patrols in the area.<\/p>\n

“Just being a little bit more engaged with what’s really going on,” said Daper.<\/p>\n

But Danny Diaz, President of the San Antonio Police Officers Association, says the department is still dealing with a staffing shortage.<\/p>\n

“Throughout the country, everyone is facing a shortage, and not that many people want this job. We are adding more officers, but it\u2019s just a slow trickle,” said Diaz.<\/p>\n

Diaz also says the justice system should reconsider releasing repeat offenders like Bustos.<\/p>\n

“What politician\u2019s family member has to be hurt before they make any changes?” said Diaz.<\/p>\n

We reached out to Wyndham, the company that owns the inns, several times to ask what\u2019s being done about safety, but they did not respond.<\/p>\n

We asked Councilman Galvan whether the property could be violating any code enforcement laws.
