Andrew Cuomo piled on Zohran Mamdani<\/a> over the Democratic Socialists of America push to scrap all misdemeanor<\/a> charges \u2014 and hit the far-left front-runner over his plan to decriminalize prostitution<\/a> during Thursday night\u2019s New York City mayoral debate.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe worst thing that could happen is if the assemblyman\u2019s proposal for legalizing prostitution went through,\u201d Cuomo, the former governor running as an independent, said from 30 Rockefeller Center for the debate aired by WNBC.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat would be terrible for the quality of life,\u201d Cuomo said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe also doesn\u2019t want to enforce misdemeanor getting to that\u2019s assault, larceny.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mamdani, the Democratic nominee \u2014 and a DSA member \u2014 has tried to distance himself from eliminating misdemeanors, a policy plank held by the far-left organization.<\/p>\n

Whoever becomes mayor will have broad powers to direct the NYPD<\/a> on which lesser crimes to enforce or not.<\/p>\n

Mamdani \u2014 who has sponsored bills for the decriminalization of sex work<\/a> as a state lawmaker \u2014 strongly pushed back as Cuomo repeatedly accused him during the WNBC debate of supporting \u201clegalizing prostitution.\u201d<\/p>\n

The democratic socialist has co-sponsored assembly bills such as \u201cCecilia\u2019s Law\u201d which would remove criminal penalties for engaging or purchasing sex work while keeping criminal penalties for trafficking.<\/p>\n

While Mamdani supported this legislation in the assembly, he was murky on the details on whether he supports loosening criminal penalties for Johns and Pimps rather than sex workers themselves, like his favorite Mayor Bill de Blasio once pushed for.<\/p>\n

The national DSA<\/a>, which Mamdani has distanced himself from, has called for the elimination of all misdemeanors.<\/p>\n
