If they live in Melbourne, they&#8217;ve got a place that&#8217;s dealing with youth crime, and they won&#8217;t get stabbed. That&#8217;s a good start.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The remark drew mixed reactions from attendees at the Brisbane event.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A video of a 36-year-old West Melbourne woman being stabbed on her way to work prompted the Victorian opposition leader to label the state the country&#8217;s crime capital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The woman was left with non-life-threatening injuries, and she has said she was unable to work or go out of her house alone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In a statement released late on Friday, Mr Crisafulli apologised for his comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It was a poor choice of words because every victim matters, regardless of where they live, and I apologise for any distress,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I&#8217;m fully aware of the realities of crime and knife crime in Queensland, which is why we are working every day to keep driving down victim numbers through initiatives such as Jack&#8217;s Law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;No-one can guarantee there&#8217;ll be no crime, but that should never deter us from driving down victim numbers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A number of high-profile knife crimes, including the <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-07-22\/vyleen-white-teenager-pleads-guilty-to-murder\/105558162\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105558162\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stabbing death of 70-year-old Vyleen White<\/a>, and the murder of 20-year-old Emma Lovell, had sent shock waves through the state in recent years.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"David Crisafulli generic\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/a182f1617510ff28ab52931b8e3690e0\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">David Crisafulli says &#8220;every victim matters&#8221; and his comment was a poor choice of words.
