He\u2019s got too many things going against him at that point,\u201d Mary recounted to the outlet in August.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DRWQLXDXF5EANKJTBM3BVOSMVU\">She noted that \u201cthere was never a doubt in Randy\u2019s mind that he could make it through,\u201d but at the time, things weren\u2019t looking good.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MSYX5FX72JE3XBTO4QAAFEL4TQ\">The \u201cForever and Ever, Amen,\u201d singer was recovering from his stroke while battling a staph infection and multiple hospital-borne bacterial viruses like Serratia and Pseudomonas. Mary explained that it \u201cone thing after another,\u201d so much so that \u201cthe doctors were just saying, \u2018He just doesn\u2019t have the strength to get through this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SEZJ67JS75AOTOHGL7ZHPGVTRY\">As Travis\u2019s vitals hit new lows and his blood cell count dwindled, Mary was told to say goodbye to her husband so he could be taken off life support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VEGL5A67M5CSLAA4IA7XXJ44RM\">\u201cThat\u2019s when I went to him. That was the moment that I knew that Randy Travis was gonna make it because he squeezed my hand and a tear went down his face. And I said, \u2018He\u2019s still fighting,\u2019\u201d Mary recalled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4Q6JP2D7KBAARK77RK7OFWZSNI\">From that point forward, she informed her husband\u2019s medical team that they were all going to keep fighting for him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BOXGN6K545GJDN2OETKFVTXGEI\">Travis\u2019s medical nightmare began in 2013 after he was hospitalized for viral cardiomyopathy. A few days later, he suffered a massive stroke that paralyzed his right side and caused aphasia, a condition that severely impaired his ability to speak and sing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"H5YBGMIPIBFVVCHLVTAQ6RANEQ\">Fortunately, the 66-year-old singer has made remarkable strides in his recovery. While he still uses a wheelchair and relies on Mary to assist him in public communication, he has returned to music.
