Steven Smith believes Kevin Muscat<\/a> is the type of character Rangers need as their new gaffer.<\/p>\n

The Ibrox Under-19\u2019s coach will take charge of Saturday\u2019s Premiership clash with Dundee United while the club finalises a move to bring Muscat to Govan.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Australian is set to sign a long-term deal as Russell Martin\u2019s<\/a> successor but will finish his season with Chinese outfit Shanghai Port first.<\/p>\n

Smith came across Muscat as a youngster at Gers back in 2003 when the experienced defender was part of Alex McLeish\u2019s Treble-winning squad.<\/p>\n

Rangers<\/a> have gone through a glut of bosses in recent years, with Martin the latest to be relieved of his duties a fortnight ago.<\/p>\n

But Smith feels Muscat could finally be the right guy to lead the club back to success.<\/p>\n

When asked if he\u2019s the type of character the club needs right now, he said: \u201cProbably. It\u2019s an interesting question.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the past four or five years we\u2019ve had different types of managers but there\u2019s no guarantee of success anywhere.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really difficult when the expectation is there to win all the time.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve experienced different managers, whether that\u2019s ones who have played here or head coach types who are deemed more tactical.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve had every type of manager but the priority is always to win.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was a young player when Kevin was here. I only came across him a few times.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy job was to clean Alex and the coaching staff\u2019s boots so I\u2019d pass him in the corridor.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a person, he was really pleasant. I know he has a reputation as a player.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut in the communication I had with him he was always really pleasant with the young players.\u201d<\/p>\n

Smith will take interim charge of a beleaguered Gers squad for the foreseeable future.<\/p>\n

Former coach Neil McCann could potentially come in to keep the seat warm for Muscat<\/a> to arrive next month.<\/p>\n

And as he looked ahead to the league game with United – and Thursday night\u2019s Europa League<\/a> tie against Brann Bergen in Norway – Smith admits he DIDN\u2019T think he\u2019d end up as boss while the club looked for a new manager.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cI probably didn\u2019t think I\u2019d end up in the dug-out. That\u2019s my honest answer.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought I\u2019d take training for the first few days then that would be my job done.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut the closer it got, and when the international players came back, I started to feel it could happen.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd in my head, I was always prepared for it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve tried to keep things as normal as possible. I\u2019ve got processes in terms of how I like to work with the U19\u2019s.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a way of working that I trust so I\u2019ve not tried anything different to what I\u2019ve learned before.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m taking it day by day. It\u2019s been a bit of a whirlwind.<\/p>\n
