{"id":311602,"date":"2025-10-17T20:26:15","date_gmt":"2025-10-17T20:26:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/311602\/"},"modified":"2025-10-17T20:26:15","modified_gmt":"2025-10-17T20:26:15","slug":"why-economists-say-colorados-economy-is-on-the-brink-of-a-recession","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/311602\/","title":{"rendered":"Why economists say Colorado&#8217;s economy is on the brink of a recession"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.cand.457131\/gov.uscourts.cand.457131.39.0_2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Court filings<\/a> show the government shutdown has forced the layoffs of more than 4,000 federal employees, including some in Colorado.<\/p>\n<p>This has forced many to rely on savings or find gig work as some lawmakers now say the shutdown could extend past the Thanksgiving holiday.<\/p>\n<p>The impacts to Coloradans and the state\u2019s economy are becoming clearer by the day. <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Markzandi\/status\/1959686593276490220\" target=\"_blank\">A recent report<\/a> from Moody&#8217;s Analytics said Colorado\u2019s economy is \u201ctreading water,&#8221; but that it is close to a recession.<\/p>\n<p>Denver7 spoke with University of Denver professor Mac Clouse to better understand why.<\/p>\n<p>Why economists say Colorado&#8217;s economy is on the brink of a recession<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think those international things are having an impact \u2014 the tariffs and the immigration,\u201d Clouse said. \u201cIt&#8217;s going to be a challenge for the ski industries to get as many employees as they normally do, and that&#8217;s going to have an impact on things like agriculture industry, on the ski industry, on the whole recreation industry, and that&#8217;s a major part of Colorado&#8217;s economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clouse also said Denver and Boulder County\u2019s label as sanctuary designations in the eyes of the federal government only makes the outlook tougher.<\/p>\n<p>The most recent <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/federalfunds.colorado.gov\/federal-funding-cuts-to-colorado\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">state data<\/a> from the end of September shows $51 million have been canceled because of the designation and another $23 million remain at risk.<\/p>\n<p>The lost money has only made Colorado\u2019s ongoing budget issues harder to overcome.<\/p>\n<p>Denver currently faces a <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.denver7.com\/news\/local-news\/denver-clerk-and-recorder-mayors-office-at-odds-over-200m-budget-shortfall#google_vignette\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$200 million budget shortfall<\/a>, and Aurora faces a <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.denver7.com\/news\/front-range\/aurora\/city-of-aurora-plans-to-raise-fees-for-residents-dip-into-reserves-to-balance-20-million-budget-deficit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$20 million shortfall<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1760732775_198_\" alt=\"dan image bar.jpg\"  width=\"1280\" height=\"164\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Denver7 | Your Voice: Get in touch with Dan Grossman<\/p>\n<p>Denver7 morning anchor Dan Grossman shares stories that have an impact in all of Colorado\u2019s communities, but specializes in covering consumer and economic issues.
