The Los Angeles City Council Friday declared Oct. 17, 2025, as \u201cCelia Cruz Day,\u201d marking the iconic Afro-Cuban singer\u2019s 100th birthday and honoring her legacy that brought salsa music to audiences around the world.<\/p>\n
Councilman Hugo Soto-Martinez led a presentation Friday in the Council Chambers at City Hall to recognize Cruz. Known as the \u201cQueen of Salsa,\u201d she recorded more than 70 albums and received several accolades throughout her career.<\/p>\n
\u201cCelia\u2019s legacy goes far beyond her music \u2014 it lives in the people she inspired and the way she uplifted Latine voices around the world,\u201d Soto-Martinez said in a statement.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe showed us the power and pride of Afro-Latinas everywhere. Today, we celebrate her lasting impact and say happy 100th birthday to a true legend,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
The celebration featured remarks and a performance by Mellow Man Ace, a Cuban-American hip-hop artist and founding member of Cypress Hill, and a live dance tribute from Stephanie Stevenson Latin Dance Studio.<\/p>\n
\u201cBeing Afro-Cuban myself, it is a great honor to be here today and perform for Celia Cruz Day,\u201d Man Ace said in a statement. \u201cI was blessed to call her auntie.\u201d<\/p>\n
Winnie Sanchez, a community leader, also spoke on Cruz\u2019s legacy as a unifying force across Latin America and the Latino diaspora.<\/p>\n
