A grassroots protest movement that began as a modest online slogan has evolved into a nationwide campaign, with thousands of demonstrators expected to fill the streets of Los Angeles on Saturday.<\/p>\n

The movement, known as \u201cNo Kings,\u201d<\/a> is organized locally by 50501 SoCal<\/a>, a regional chapter of a larger national coalition that promotes civic engagement and nonviolent protest. Organizers say the effort was born out of concern over what they describe as growing threats to democratic institutions and executive overreach.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re here to protect our democracy from this administration, from Donald Trump \u2014 a wannabe king,\u201d said Hunter Dunn, an organizer with 50501 SoCal, adding that the group\u2019s focus remains on \u201cpeaceful civic action.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the organization\u2019s website, 50501 began as a decentralized response to what it calls the \u201canti-democratic and illegal actions of the Trump administration and its plutocratic allies.\u201d The name reflects its founding concept: \u201c50 protests. 50 states. 1 movement.\u201d<\/p>\n

What began as a single day of coordinated demonstrations \u2014 more than 80 protests held across all 50 states \u2014 has since evolved into a recurring campaign of nationwide actions. The group says it has \u201cmobilized millions of people\u201d through a growing network of volunteer organizers and partner organizations dedicated to defending civil liberties and democratic norms.<\/p>\n

The \u201cNo Kings\u201d rallies first gained traction earlier this year following federal enforcement actions, including ICE raids and National Guard deployments in the Los Angeles area. In June, thousands joined protests across Greater L.A. \u2014 most of which remained peaceful \u2014 though a few incidents prompted Mayor Karen Bass to impose a temporary curfew in a one-square-mile section of downtown.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe absolutely support and have to have peaceful protests,\u201d Bass said at the time. \u201cThat is a part of our American way, and no one should engage in any type of vandalism, but the overwhelming majority of them have been peaceful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gov. Gavin Newsom also urged participants to avoid unrest, saying, \u201cIf you participate, do so peacefully\u2026 because there\u2019s one person that hopes you don\u2019t and hopes there is disruption\u2026 and he will exploit that and take advantage of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Despite those assurances, the movement has drawn sharp criticism from some conservative lawmakers. House Speaker Mike Johnson called it \u201cthe \u2018Hate America\u2019 rally,\u201d while Sen. Josh Hawley, Republican of Missouri, said participants are \u201ctotal hypocrites\u201d who \u201caren\u2019t interested in democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Organizers reject those characterizations. \u201cFirst off, we\u2019re pro-democracy and we\u2019re incredibly peaceful,\u201d Dunn said. \u201cI\u2019m not a member of an organization called Antifa\u2026 but I\u2019m a proud anti-fascist.\u201d<\/p>\n

    The Los Angeles gathering is one of more than 2,700 events planned across the country, including in Memphis, Portland, Washington, D.C., and Chicago. Dunn described the demonstrations as a show of unity among cities that have supported each other during past protests.<\/p>\n

    \u201cWe need to stand with those cities, the way that they stood with us on June 14,\u201d he said, \u201cand \u2018No Kings\u2019 is one way to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n
