PERHAM, Maine (WGME) — Maine authorities are offering a $3,000 reward for information about whoever illegally shot and killed a Canada lynx in Perham.<\/p>\n

The Maine Warden Service found a dead Canada lynx along Mouse Island Road in Perham in Aroostook County on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Wardens say the lynx did not die of natural causes. The animal was shot and killed approximately 24 hours before it was found.<\/p>\n

The Canada lynx is a federally protected species. It is a federal offense to harass, trap, hunt, or kill a lynx in the United States.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe shooting of this animal was unnecessary, conducted without regard for its protected status, and left to waste,\u201d the Maine Warden Service said.<\/p>\n

Operation Game Thief is offering a $3,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.<\/p>\n
