He noted that Samuel\u2019s spiritual name is Little Boy on the Moon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cI believe everything happens for a reason,\u201d Det. Buhler said. \u201cIt\u2019s hard not to believe that we were meant to find Samuel on that day, at that time.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">It was exactly four months to the day after homicide investigators had taken over the case, and one day after a tactical team <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/canada\/alberta\/article-samuel-bird-murder-edmonton-bryan-farrell-missing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/canada\/alberta\/article-samuel-bird-murder-edmonton-bryan-farrell-missing\/\">arrested 38-year-old Bryan Clinton James Farrell<\/a> and charged him with second-degree murder in Samuel\u2019s death. <\/p>\n<p><a style=\"display:block\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/resizer\/v2\/Z5F63BCVHFGC7KX7EYNZ24546A.jpg?auth=bee9ed5746ce4c9ddc29e8fdc4cce62960c14e70c6278bf06e4f25f00a91fe9a&amp;width=600&amp;height=400&amp;quality=80&amp;smart=true\" aria-haspopup=\"true\" data-photo-viewer-index=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Open this photo in gallery:<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"figcap-text\">Samuel Bird was last seen in West Edmonton on June 1. Police believe he was killed that night.SUPPLIED\/CANADIAN PRESS<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Mr. Farrell is facing a raft of other charges related to the investigation, including for allegedly burning down his own home, and threatening to harm or kill Samuel Bird\u2019s mother, Alanna Bird \u2013 both in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The news conference provided new details about a case that has captured the attention of people around Alberta and far beyond, offering a glimpse into an intensive police investigation conducted so deeply out of public view that many people believed police weren\u2019t investigating at all. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cWe found Sam and we charged somebody for Sam\u2019s murder. Behind the scenes, people don\u2019t understand how difficult that is, the evidence we need to, A) locate the body and B) then sustain the charge in court,\u201d said Det. Buhler, who stood flanked by other homicide investigators who worked on the case, the homicide section staff sergeant, and Police Chief Warren Driechel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cThere have been so many times in this case where our investigation has hung by a literal thread. And the pressure of knowing that we can fail at any moment, including three o\u2019clock on yesterday morning, I can\u2019t even describe that,\u201d Det. Buhler said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Police Chief Driechel acknowledged that there have been \u201cquestions and speculation\u201d around the timeline of when information about the case was made public. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cI hope this investigation illustrates how seriously we take missing persons, and not all police work is done in the public eye,\u201d he said. \u201cOur major crimes branch was investigating this long before the first news release was issued, and as Detective Buhler has previously stated, every step that was taken in this investigation was done strategically.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"display:block\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/resizer\/v2\/H5O6TWOSOZAVXAAD5E7OYWDP54.JPG?auth=1ca46e5c79c8c18a1ac6b05dad31194659fbdddb184fc643089155db51fba915&amp;width=600&amp;height=400&amp;quality=80&amp;smart=true\" aria-haspopup=\"true\" data-photo-viewer-index=\"2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Open this photo in gallery:<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"figcap-text\">Det. Buhler, left, hugs Samuel Bird&#8217;s grandmother Geri Potts as police search for the 14-year-old&#8217;s remains.Amber Bracken\/The Globe and Mail<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The investigation into Samuel\u2019s death was named Project Hobbledehoy, which he described as \u201ca term which has been used to describe a boy in the awkward stage between childhood and adulthood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Samuel was last seen on surveillance video walking through a schoolyard on his way to Mr. Farrell\u2019s residence in West Edmonton on June 1. Police believe he was killed that night, and his body taken out of the city and hidden within the next day. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Ms. Bird reported Samuel missing to police on June 6, and homicide investigators took over the case 10 days later. Ms. Bird previously told The Globe and Mail that Samuel had been dating Mr. Farrell\u2019s daughter. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Police did not publicly announce that Samuel was missing for more than a month, and did not confirm his disappearance was considered suspicious until late in August. At the same time, Samuel\u2019s parents and their families embarked on their own community searches, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/canada\/alberta\/article-as-police-search-for-suspects-in-samuel-birds-death-a-sacred-fire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/canada\/alberta\/article-as-police-search-for-suspects-in-samuel-birds-death-a-sacred-fire\/\">sparking an active movement<\/a> both online and in real life, fuelled both by a concern for the Indigenous teen, and by a narrative that police weren\u2019t investigating or searching for Samuel. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Samuel\u2019s parents have expressed their gratitude to investigators and have said they trusted the investigative strategy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Det. Buhler said the investigation benefitted from the perception that police weren\u2019t doing anything, but he noted that the cost of the investigative strategy was \u201cwithering public criticism,\u201d which ranged from \u201cpolitical comment to daily denigration on social media,\u201d and personal criticism. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cWhile there have been positive aspects to the public and social media attention Samuel\u2019s case has drawn, there has also been an element I would characterize as social vigilantism,\u201d he said. \u201cAt several stages, this directly impacted and jeopardized the police investigation.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">But despite serious challenges that included misinformation, rumours and floods of repeated, discounted or baseless tips, Det.
