It spoke to the California hard rock band\u2019s overall ethos. The classic Guns N\u2019 Roses lineup of lead vocalist Axl Rose, lead guitarist\u00a0Slash,\u00a0rhythm guitarist Izzy Stradlin,\u00a0bassist Duff McKagan, and\u00a0drummer Steven Adler enjoyed immense success with songs like \u201cWelcome to the Jungle\u201d and \u201cSweet Child O\u2019 Mine.\u201d Behind dressing room doors, however, substance use issues and interpersonal chaos reigned. On this day in 1989, frontman Axl Rose made the band\u2019s private issues quite public.<\/p>\n<p>            Axl Rose Spontaneously Announces Guns N\u2019 Roses\u2019 Final Show<\/p>\n<p>Riding high from the success of their first two albums, Appetite for Destruction and G N\u2019 R Lies, the band was seemingly at the top of their game when they joined the Rolling Stones onstage at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. However, Guns N\u2019 Roses hadn\u2019t yet <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20131105224542\/http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment\/la-et-stones1989,0,4431367,full.story\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">played a single note<\/a> before Axl Rose\u2019s first outburst.<\/p>\n<p>After vehemently defending <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2018\/may\/08\/guns-n-roses-remove-song-homophobic-racist-language-one-million-reissue-album\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">controversial lyrics<\/a> from the band\u2019s 1988 song \u201cOne in a Million,\u201d Rose had another bone to pick\u2014this one with his own bandmates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hate to do this onstage,\u201d he began. \u201cBut I\u2019ve tried every other f\u2014ing way. And unless certain people in this band start getting their s\u2014 together, these are going to be the last Guns N\u2019 Roses shows you\u2019ll f\u2014ing ever see.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-media-max-width=\"560\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Today in Rock History<\/p>\n<p>October 18, 1989<br \/>At a Los Angeles show opening for The Rolling Stones, Axl Rose warns the crowd: \u201cUnless certain people in this band get their s\u2013t together, these will be the last Guns N\u2019 Roses shows you\u2019ll f\u2013king ever see.\u201d His frustration with his\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/7FMgHX6V6E\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/7FMgHX6V6E<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Rock History Live! (@KTrain939913) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KTrain939913\/status\/1979282167243964525?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">October 17, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cBecause I\u2019m tired,\u201d he continued, \u201cof too many people in this organization dancing with Mr. godd\u2013n Brownstone.\u201d This was a reference to the band\u2019s 1987 song of the same name, written about h*roin use.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/americansongwriter.com\/the-song-metallica-allegedly-wrote-about-axl-rose-after-touring-with-guns-n-roses\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">[RELATED: The Song Metallica Allegedly Wrote About Axl Rose After Touring with Guns N\u2019 Roses]<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Slash Never Forgave Him<\/p>\n<p>Axl Rose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-1989-10-20-me-405-story.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">would later apologize<\/a> for his remarks, returning to the stage with Guns N\u2019 Roses the next day. \u201cI just didn\u2019t want to see my friends slip away,\u201d the contentious frontman told the Los Angeles Times.<\/p>\n<p>That <a href=\"https:\/\/faroutmagazine.co.uk\/guns-n-roses-incident-slash-never-forgave-axl-rose-for\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">didn\u2019t quite cut it<\/a> for one bandmate, however. \u201cI know it was directed at me because I was all strung out at the time,\u201d Slash said in a 2004 VH1\u00a0Behind the Music\u00a0documentary about the band. \u201cThat was one of the things that probably made me hate Axl more than anything, something I probably never ever forgave him for, without really even thinking about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Featured image by Jeffrey Mayer\/WireImage<\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Appetite for Destruction was more than just the title of Guns N\u2019 Roses\u2019 1987 debut album.
