Mr Burgess has now been unemployed for three months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">The government said in August it had launched a scheme to get thousands more young people into training and work.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1760612419_840_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 hagXkB hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/3afe1d10-ab79-11f0-adb1-afd098d794f7.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"PA Media The Port of Felixstowe with cranes and shipping containers.\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 bGQwLJ\"\/>PA Media<\/p>\n<p>Joe Burgess had worked for a shipping firm for two-and-a-half years at the container port at Felixstowe in Suffolk<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">This week the national unemployment rate <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cjek274q99xo\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 jZoZnB\" rel=\"noopener\">rose from 4.7% to 4.8%,<\/a> driven &#8220;mostly by younger people&#8221;, according to the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 jZoZnB\" rel=\"noopener\">Office for National Statistics (ONS)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">In the East of England, the latest figures on youth unemployment show the number of 16 to 24-year-olds out of work has risen by 13.6% over the past 10 years, from 66,000 in June-Aug 2015 to 75,000 in June-Aug 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Danni Hewson, AJ Bell&#8217;s head of financial analysis, said the figures were creating &#8220;a clearer picture of a labour market that&#8217;s soft, with younger workers facing the biggest challenges&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1760612419_840_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 hagXkB hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/9320acb0-ab79-11f0-adb1-afd098d794f7.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Martin Giles\/BBC Joe and his mother Amanda Burgess in a kitchen\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 bGQwLJ\"\/>Martin Giles\/BBC<\/p>\n<p>Joe Burgess has been supported by his mother Amanda Burgess, who said she shared his &#8220;frustration&#8221; as he strived to get a job<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Mr Burgess told BBC Politics East that over the past two months he had applied for 80 jobs without success.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">&#8220;It&#8217;s been a constant cycle of redundancies. I just have to keep going, keep pushing myself,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">His mother, Amanda Burgess, said her son had been &#8220;knocked down so often&#8221; but &#8220;doesn&#8217;t give up&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">&#8220;It&#8217;s so frustrating,&#8221; she said. &#8220;There&#8217;s not much help out there.
