it could carry a hidden health risk.<\/p>\n<p>A new study has revealed a troubling connection between proximity to golf courses and the likelihood of developing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-sun.com\/topic\/parkinsons\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Parkinson&#039;s disease (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Parkinson&#8217;s disease<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Close-up of a senior woman's hand holding a mug, showing symptoms of Parkinson's disease.\" height=\"574\" width=\"960\" data-credit=\"Getty\" data-img=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/close-senior-woman-hand-hold-1006918509.jpg\" data-caption=\"Living near a golf course may raise your risk of Parkinson\u2019s disease, a new study has found (stock image)\"   loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/close-senior-woman-hand-hold-1006918509.jpg\" role=\"img\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>2<\/p>\n<p>Living near a golf course may raise your risk of Parkinson\u2019s disease, a new study has found (stock image)Credit: Getty<a href=\"#\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A senior man golfing on a green course.\" height=\"641\" width=\"960\" data-credit=\"Getty\" data-img=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/NINTCHDBPICT001006915555.jpg\" data-caption=\"Living within one mile of a golf course was linked to a 126% increase in odds of developing Parkinson (stock image)\"   loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/NINTCHDBPICT001006915555.jpg\" role=\"img\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>2<\/p>\n<p>Living within one mile of a golf course was linked to a 126% increase in odds of developing Parkinson (stock image)Credit: Getty<\/p>\n<p>The research focused on residents in southern <a aria-label=\"Minnesota (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.the-sun.com\/where\/minnesota\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Minnesota<\/a> and western Wisconsin, where <a aria-label=\"pesticide (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.the-sun.com\/news\/14588730\/japan-school-insecticide-incident\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pesticide<\/a> use on <a aria-label=\"golf courses (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.the-sun.com\/sport\/golf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">golf courses<\/a> may be a key factor.<\/p>\n<p>Led by the <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/40338549\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Barrow Neurological Institute (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\">Barrow Neurological Institute<\/a> in Arizona, along with Mayo Clinic, the study analyzed 419 Parkinson&#8217;s patients with a control group.<\/p>\n<p>Data from the Rochester Epidemiology Project between 1991 and 2015 helped researchers compare Parkinson\u2019s patients with a control group.<\/p>\n<p>The greatest risk was seen in people living one to three miles from a golf course and the expansive lawns that come with it. <\/p>\n<p>Living within one mile of a fairway was linked to a 126% increase in odds of <a aria-label=\"developing Parkinson&#039;s (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.the-sun.com\/health\/14522478\/earwax-musky-smell-sebum-parkinsons-diagnosis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">developing Parkinson&#8217;s<\/a>, the study found.<\/p>\n<p>Those in water service areas that included a golf course had nearly double the risk compared to areas without one. <\/p>\n<p>The risk jumped 82% for people living in under water service areas that also had vulnerable groundwater.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPesticides applied to golf courses may play a role in the incidence of PD [Parkinson\u2019s disease] for nearby residents,\u201d researchers concluded in the study, published in <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2833716#google_vignette\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"JAMA Network Open (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\">JAMA Network Open<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe strongest effects were in municipal water service areas with a golf course and in regions with vulnerable groundwater based on the bedrock and topography,\u201d lead author Brittany Krzyzanowski, Ph.D told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/living-near-golf-course-linked-parkinsons-risk-study-some-cite-limitations\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Fox News (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\">Fox News<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>She added, \u201cWe speculate that pesticides might play a role. However, we didn\u2019t include data on pesticides in this study, so future research is needed to better understand what\u2019s going on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peter Andre shares emotional moment he\u2019s reunited with his mum Thea who\u2019s battling Parkinson\u2019s and Alzheimer\u2019s<\/p>\n<p>Medical director of the MS Center at Holy Name Medical Center in New Jersey, Dr. Mary Ann Picone, who was not involved in the research, weighed in on the findings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere has often been discussion regarding risks for development of Parkinson\u2019s disease and environmental agents such as pesticides,\u201d she told Fox News.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFurther research is needed with larger groups of patients, but this study does increase the concern about the association between pesticide exposure and risk of Parkinson\u2019s,\u201d Picone added.<\/p>\n<p>She also warned that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-sun.com\/news\/us-news\/1088965\/coronavirus-experts-airborne\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"airborne (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">airborne<\/a> exposure to pesticides could contribute to the risk.<\/p>\n<p>What is Parkinson&#8217;s disease?<\/p>\n<p>PARKINSON&#8217;S is a progressive neurological condition. <\/p>\n<p>This means that it causes problems in the brain and gets worse over time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>People with Parkinson&#8217;s don&#8217;t have enough of the chemical dopamine in their brain because some of the nerve cells that make it have stopped working.<\/p>\n<p>Around 145,000 people live with Parkinson\u2019s in the UK. <\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the fastest growing neurological condition in the world. <\/p>\n<p>Symptoms start to appear when the brain can\u2019t make enough dopamine to control movement properly.<\/p>\n<p>This usually happens around the age of 50, but some people might see the first signs in their 40s. <\/p>\n<p>There are over 40 symptoms, but the three main ones are: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A tremor (shaking)<\/li>\n<li>Slowness of movement<\/li>\n<li>Rigidity (muscle stiffness)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are several different treatments, therapies and support available to help manage the condition. <\/p>\n<p>Source: Parkinson&#8217;s UK<\/p>\n<p>The study did not measure individual levels of pesticide exposure, which researchers noted as a limitation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are many other aspects as well that can interfere with developing a disease,\u201d said senior author Dr. Rodolfo Savica of the Mayo Clinic.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers admitted the results may not apply to all areas, since the study focused on a region with hot, humid summers where pesticide use may be higher.<\/p>\n<p>Other risk factors, like head injuries or genetics were also not considered in the study.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DEVELOPING PARKINSON&#8217;S<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Krzyzanowski pointed out that Parkinson\u2019s can take decades to develop, so the focus was on exposure from years ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf pesticides were involved, they would be the ones sprayed a long time ago and that might be different from what\u2019s being sprayed today,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Picone echoed that point, adding the research looked at exposure going back to 2013 or earlier.<\/p>\n<p>The Golf Course Superintendents Association of America pushed back on the study\u2019s implications.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPublic health experts and researchers who have reviewed the study have noted that the study\u2019s methodological limitations make it difficult to draw conclusions from the data,\u201d the group said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>They added that all pesticides used on golf courses are registered by the EPA and don\u2019t create \u201cunreasonable adverse effects\u201d when applied properly.<\/p>\n<p>Mayo Clinic\u2019s Savica said older adults should still enjoy being active and social.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI recommend people continue to play sports outdoors and enjoy the sociality of any activity, including playing golf,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>But he also advised people to be cautious around areas where pesticide exposure may be possible.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"LIVING near a golf course might come with more than just scenic views &#8211;
