It\u2019s been too long since we had one. A lot of people are mad at how long the tutorial lasts, and the new mechanics seem to take some getting used to, but there\u2019s a lot to like about the new world and new system.<\/li>\n<li class=\"_11h7yix1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/macbook-pro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Apple\u2019s M5 MacBook Pro<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong> Apple released a bunch of M5-powered gear this week, but the best place to put all that power is pretty clearly in Apple\u2019s high-end laptop. I\u2019ve been a very happy M4 owner for a while now, and I suspect a lot of people will love this upgrade.<\/li>\n<li class=\"_11h7yix1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.themoviedb.org\/tv\/127366-splinter-cell?language=en-US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Splinter Cell: Deathwatch<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong> TV shows based on video games: usually (but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themoviedb.org\/tv\/106379-fallout?language=en-US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">not<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themoviedb.org\/tv\/100088-the-last-of-us?language=en-US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">always<\/a>) pretty bad! The vibe on this one seems to be \u201cpretty good, but if you\u2019re a Splinter Cell obsessive it might drive you nuts in spots.\u201d I am not. I like my chances.<\/li>\n<li class=\"_11h7yix1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raycast.com\/ios\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Raycast for iOS<\/strong><\/a>. Version 1.1 is the Raycast mobile app I\u2019ve been waiting for: a keyboard that works across apps and lets you access snippets and links, chat with AI, and take notes. Third-party iOS keyboards haven\u2019t always worked great, but I\u2019m liking this so far.<\/li>\n<li class=\"_11h7yix1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.themoviedb.org\/tv\/292130-mr-scorsese\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Mr. Scorsese<\/strong><\/a>. Very few people have lived and succeeded through as many Hollywood eras as Martin Scorsese. I\u2019ve only seen a bit of this five-part Apple TV series about his life and work, but I\u2019m already impressed with how deep it is.<\/li>\n<li class=\"_11h7yix1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ioi.dk\/hitman-absolution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Hitman: Absolution<\/strong><\/a>. All the Hitman titles are sort of action games, sort of puzzle games, and pretty much all very fun. This one\u2019s a really old game \u2014 from 2012! \u2014 but the news is that it\u2019s now on <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/hitman-absolution\/id6737513240\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">iOS<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com\/?id=1025X1701640&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fplay.google.com%2Fstore%2Fapps%2Fdetails%3Fid%3Dcom.feralinteractive.hitmanabsolution_android%26hl%3Den_US\" rel=\"sponsored noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Android<\/a>. I\u2019ve only played a little, but it actually works pretty well on the small screen.<\/li>\n<li class=\"_11h7yix1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com\/?id=1025X1701640&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fus.kobobooks.com%2Fproducts%2Fkobo-remote\" rel=\"sponsored noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>The Kobo Remote<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong> There are a lot of page-turner remotes out there, but they\u2019re mostly hacky and require attaching a mechanical thing to your e-reader. Super smart of Kobo to make one that works over Bluetooth and doesn\u2019t get in the way.<\/li>\n<li class=\"_11h7yix1\"><strong>\u201c<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=F80Cl6WzBNo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>I played EVERY first-person shooter ever made in Japan<\/strong><\/a><strong>.\u201d<\/strong> I confess, I did not watch every second of this 2.5-hour YouTube tour through shooter game history. But even if all you do is scrub through to watch the visual evolution of four decades of video games, I bet you\u2019ll end up watching more than you expect. I did.<\/li>\n<li class=\"_11h7yix1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ballxpit.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Ball x Pit<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong> This is a smorgasbord of video game ideas that all seem to add up to something both relatively simple \u2014 a ball-shooting, level-clearing game \u2014 and wildly, even overly complex. I\u2019m going to end up playing a lot of this.<\/li>\n<li class=\"_11h7yix1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/665634\/1929-by-andrew-ross-sorkin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>1929: Inside the Greatest Crash in Wall Street History\u2014and How It Shattered a Nation<\/strong><\/a><strong>. <\/strong>Andrew Ross Sorkin\u2019s book is technically about events from a hundred years ago, but my goodness does it rhyme with what\u2019s happening in AI, on Wall Street, and all over America. If you want a good teaser, Sorkin was good <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=26WMF7Xdb0E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>on <\/strong><strong>60 Minutes<\/strong><\/a> last weekend.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">I always like to have new Verge team members share their homescreens here, so we can get to know them a little and also so I can subtly judge them for all their life choices. We have a few new folks here, actually, so it\u2019s time to catch up! First up, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/authors\/terrence-obrien\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Terrence O\u2019Brien<\/strong><\/a>, our not-that-new-anymore weekend editor \u2014 I read his work for years at Engadget and have also always enjoyed his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/reviews\/608609\/teenage-engineering-op-xy-review\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deep knowledge of music gear<\/a>, but I had no idea what to expect from his homescreen setup. Maybe he doesn\u2019t have a phone and just carries around some cool Teenage Engineering stuff?<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Turns out I wasn\u2019t entirely off base. I\u2019m trying to spend less time staring at a screen in general, but especially my phone. I wanted to do my best to recreate the experience of a Light Phone or something similar, without having to give up things like RCS or ticketing apps. (I go to a lot of concerts and not having Dice, AXS, or Ticketmaster on my phone is kind of a deal-breaker.) I try to keep my homescreen focused on \u201cproductive\u201d apps. Nothing that will encourage doomscrolling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/obsidian.md\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Obsidian<\/strong><\/a> is there for purely reference purposes (recipes, combination lock codes I can never remember, etc.). While the desktop app is incredible, the mobile interface is slow and kind of terrible. For actual note-taking on the go, I much prefer a Field Notes pocket notebook and a pen. I use <a href=\"https:\/\/readwise.io\/read\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Readwise\u2019s Reader<\/strong><\/a> because it autogenerates time-synced transcripts for YouTube videos and because of its integration with Obsidian, which makes collecting research and taking notes much easier, even though I kind of hate its UI.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">I also asked Terrence to share a few things he\u2019s into right now. Here\u2019s what he sent back:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"duet--article--unordered-list _1ymtmqpi _11h7yix0 _1xwtict1\">\n<li class=\"_11h7yix1\">I have rediscovered my love of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welcometonightvale.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Welcome to Night Vale<\/strong><\/a>, a fiction podcast that basically presents Lovecraftian horrors as mundane community radio updates. It\u2019s both funny and spooky in equal measure. Now that my oldest is starting to develop a taste for the weird and creepy, this has been something we can listen to together, and he\u2019s even inspired me to catch up on all the years I\u2019ve missed at this point.<\/li>\n<li class=\"_11h7yix1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@Hainbach\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Hainbach<\/strong><\/a> is a German YouTuber and experimental musician. His whole thing is making music with test equipment from labs, tape loops, and super obscure instruments (he has a thing for vintage Italian synths, it seems). Watching someone turn a piece of telephone line test equipment into the most intense kick drum you\u2019ve ever heard is just a blast.<\/li>\n<li class=\"_11h7yix1\">When I need a dose of dopamine because I\u2019m having a rough day, I turn to the various pitbull subreddits. The straight <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/pitbulls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>r\/pitbulls<\/strong><\/a> is usually a reliable pick-me-up. But sometimes I need the extra niche boost of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/pitbulls_in_partyhats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>r\/pitbulls_in_partyhats<\/strong><\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/PittiesAndKitties\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>r\/PittiesAndKitties<\/strong><\/a>. Feels especially timely with the sad passing of D\u2019Angelo, who features heavily in the book as someone J Dilla worked with.\u201d \u2014 Jake<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.themoviedb.org\/tv\/228305-task?language=en-US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Task<\/strong><\/a> on HBO is an enjoyable miniseries. The sequel somehow improves on a game that, for me, was almost flawless and I thought could not get any better. I migrated from Google Photos to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.photoprism.app\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>PhotoPrism<\/strong><\/a> instance. Been using it for over 4 years with no issues and zero maintenance. Costs about $10\/month in my case, and PikaPods takes care of the hosting, the database, image storage, and everything. I get daily backups, a custom domain, SSH access, etc.\u201d \u2014 Luke<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">\u201cPlaying <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Donkey_Kong_Country\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Donkey Kong Country<\/strong><\/a> on my <a href=\"https:\/\/officialmiyoomini.com\/product-category\/miyoo-mini-plus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Miyoo Mini Plus<\/strong><\/a> has been a fun way to relax in the first few weeks with my newborn daughter, Amelia! Something cozy and comforting about retro games and transparent tech!\u201d \u2014 Dylan<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">\u201cI just found my perfect wallet, and I need to share it: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osleather.com\/product-page\/topsider-bifold-lt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Topsider Bifold LT<\/strong><\/a>. Everything you do with the Toniebox, I can technically do with a dozen other things in my house, but there\u2019s something about the way it\u2019s made and the actual mechanics of it that totally change the appeal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Suddenly I\u2019m over here, like, shopping for an iPod to see if it\u2019ll do the same for my own listening behavior.
