{"id":316414,"date":"2025-10-19T16:40:12","date_gmt":"2025-10-19T16:40:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/316414\/"},"modified":"2025-10-19T16:40:12","modified_gmt":"2025-10-19T16:40:12","slug":"prop-50-is-about-protecting-democrats-not-democracy-san-diego-union-tribune","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/316414\/","title":{"rendered":"Prop. 50 is about protecting Democrats, not democracy \u2013 San Diego Union-Tribune"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It is encouraging to see the spirited debate on Proposition 50, but I wonder if those who advocate for its passage believe that \u201cdefending the rights of California\u2019s voters\u201d actually means \u201cdefending the rights of California\u2019s voters to vote Democratic.\u201d While I am disappointed to hear that he will vote for Proposition 50, I believe San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan has <a href=\"https:\/\/sanjosespotlight.com\/silicon-valley-officials-begrudgingly-back-prop-50\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">perfectly stated<\/a> the backward logic of the underlying premise: \u201cIt\u2019s not good governance to allow politicians to pick their constituents.\u201d In an effort to provide alternatives, I suggest that those eager to make more voters Democratic focus on new approaches to governing as opposed to quick fixes to geography.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 John Bussard, Scripps Ranch<\/p>\n<p>If Proposition 50 passes, a large number of California Republicans will lose their representation in Congress. It is not President Trump who is a threat to democracy.
