{"id":316479,"date":"2025-10-19T17:19:24","date_gmt":"2025-10-19T17:19:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/316479\/"},"modified":"2025-10-19T17:19:24","modified_gmt":"2025-10-19T17:19:24","slug":"one-in-three-south-africans-faces-mental-illness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/316479\/","title":{"rendered":"One in three South Africans faces mental illness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n\t\tSadag urges South Africans to unite against stigma as one in three people battles mental illness without access to treatment.\n\t<\/p>\n<p>One in three South Africans will experience a mental Illness in their lifetime, while nine out of 10 people living with a mental Illness do not have access to treatment, according to the statistics. <\/p>\n<p>In light of this situation, the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag) is calling on everyone to play a role in the fight against mental Illness and the stigma associated with it. <\/p>\n<p>Sadag is using World Mental Health Month to roll out a campaign aimed at educating the public on mental health. <\/p>\n<p>Growing number of mental health cases in SA<\/p>\n<p>According to Sadag, South Africa is one of the countries with a growing number of mental health cases. <\/p>\n<p>Cassey Chambers, operations director at Sadag, said the organisation would mark the month under the theme, Together for Mental Health. <\/p>\n<p>Chambers said mental health was one of the most urgent issues facing South Africans. <\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO READ:<\/strong> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.co.za\/news\/elderly-abuse-complaints-one-per-week-six-years-gauteng-social-development\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Here is how many elderly abuse complaints were registered with Gauteng Social Development<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>She said Sadag, government, corporates, schools, communities and civil society were determined to make a positive change by raising awareness, breaking the stigma and mobilising action. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlone, we can only do so much, but together we can do so much more. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year\u2019s theme reminds us that mental health affects every family, every workplace and every community. <\/p>\n<p>Mental illness affects every family, workplace and community<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy standing together we break down stigma, strengthen partnerships and create hope for millions of South Africans.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>She said that this year\u2019s commemorations include a series of nationwide activations designed to bring mental health into every space \u2013 from schools and workplaces to communities and homes. <\/p>\n<p>The campaign, titled Go Green for Mental Health, would target schools, workplaces, universities and corporations. <\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO READ:<\/strong> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.co.za\/lifestyle\/feeling-overwhelmed-at-work-here-is-how-to-fix-the-mental-health-dilemma\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Feeling overwhelmed at work? Here is how to fix the mental health dilemma<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will be encouraging pupils, teachers, employees and leaders to wear green, decorate offices and purchase green awareness ribbons. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe proceeds will go to Sadag\u2019s suicide helplines.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Clinical psychologist and Sadag board chair Dr Colinda Linde said Go Green was a show of support and a way to let people know they are not alone. <\/p>\n<p>You are not alone <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year, Sadag\u2019s call is that mental health cannot be left in the shadows. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery South African has a role to play in raising awareness, breaking stigma and offering support.\u201d  <\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Need help?
