The man found dead and dismembered outside his Brooklyn apartment building<\/a> was remembered Saturday as a loving, non-violent man who was looking forward to his upcoming birthday, the Daily News has learned.<\/p>\n

Darrell Montgomery, slender and just 5-foot-4, was a gentle soul who was going to turn 34 next month, his heartbroken mother told The News Saturday as she wept openly outside her son\u2019s Flatbush apartment building, just steps from the blue trash bin where his hacked-up body was found<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was going to the train and they called me and told me (what happened),\u201d said the mom, who wished not to be named. \u201cI passed out on the train.\u201d<\/p>\n

Montgomery\u2019s family lives out of state. As soon as they learned what happened, they showed up at the victim\u2019s apartment building on E. 21st St. near Ditmas Ave., but the cops guarding his sixth-floor apartment weren\u2019t able to share anything with them.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy son was a loving son,\u201d the mom said. \u201cHe stays to himself and he didn\u2019t bother nobody.\u201d<\/p>\n

Montgomery\u2019s head and torso were found in a black plastic garbage bag<\/a> in the blue bin just after 9 a.m. Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m thinking this is a dream,\u201d said Montgomery\u2019s younger sister, Shakeema, who tried her best to console her mother at the scene. \u201cI was just reading this article (about this killing) yesterday and I didn\u2019t know it was my brother.\u201d<\/p>\n

Construction workers discovered the dismembered remains outside the building after smelling a foul odor, police sources said.<\/p>\n

Cops immediately cordoned off Montgomery\u2019s apartment to search for more evidence, but it wasn\u2019t immediately clear if any other body parts were found inside.<\/p>\n

Cops on Saturday could not immediately confirm the victim\u2019s identity. The remains were brought to the city Medical Examiner<\/a>, which will conduct an autopsy and officially identify the victim.<\/p>\n

Neighbors told police that Montgomery was living with a much taller man, possibly his boyfriend, before the victim\u2019s body was discovered.<\/p>\n

At about 6-foot-3, the roommate towered over Montgomery, neighbors said. The victim\u2019s family said they had never met the roommate.<\/p>\n

Neighbors said the pair had lived in the building for a few years, moving in soon after the end of the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

The two were always together, a 54-year-old resident said, noting, \u201cWhere you saw the tall one, you saw the short one.\u201d<\/p>\n

One 75-year-old neighbor recalled seeing Montgomery\u2019s roommate outside the building on Thursday, a day before Montgomery\u2019s body was found.<\/p>\n

Cops were looking to question the roommate. No arrests have been made.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was just a gentle person,\u201d Shakeema said about her brother, \u201cfamily-oriented.\u201d<\/p>\n

She hadn\u2019t spoken to him for more than a month, she admitted.<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember my brother picking me up from school,\u201d Shakeema recalled fondly. \u201cHe was not violent at all \u2014 so for this guy, he had to intimidate my brother.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI honestly want justice,\u201d she said. \u201cMy brother was not violent.\u201d<\/p>\n
