Early results in Tuesday\u2019s special election<\/a>\u00a0to fill the\u00a0District 1<\/a>\u00a0San Diego County Supervisor seat indicate Imperial Beach Mayor\u00a0Paloma Aguirre<\/a> holds a lead over Chula Vista Mayor\u00a0John McCann<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Aguirre is ahead with 53.40% of the vote to McCann\u2019s 46.60%, according to the\u00a0San Diego Registrar of Voters<\/a>, with 18.7% of ballots counted.<\/p>\n

Former San Diego County District 1 Supervisor Nora Vargas\u00a0announced<\/a>\u00a0in late December that she would not serve her second term \u2014 despite winning re-election in November. <\/p>\n

\u201cDue to personal safety and security reasons, I will not take the oath of office for a second term,\u201d she said in a\u00a0statement<\/a>\u00a0at the time.<\/p>\n

McCann topped the field of seven candidates in the April 8 primary, drawing 43.58% of the vote. Aguirre earned the other spot in the runoff by finishing second with 31.62%.<\/p>\n

With a population of 650,000 residents, District 1 contains three cities: Chula Vista, Imperial Beach and National City. It also holds 15 neighborhoods within the city of San Diego, including East Village, Mountain View and San Ysidro, and six unincorporated communities, including Bonita, East Otay Mesa and portion of Spring Valley.<\/p>\n

Aguirre is a Democrat and McCann is a Republican. The Board of Supervisors is technically a nonpartisan governing body, like all local government boards in California.<\/p>\n

The current makeup is split between two Democrats \u2014 Terra Lawson-Remer and Monica Montgomery Steppe \u2014 and two Republicans, Joel Anderson and Jim Desmond.<\/p>\n

Tuesday\u2019s winner will fill the vacant seat for the remainder of the current term that ends in January 2029.<\/p>\n

The Registrar\u2019s office can confirm when an individual ballot was received at\u00a0sdvote.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n
